I keep read good things about this Safety draft by CIN in the 3rd. Any opinions?

Bengals fan here :

Williams seems to be impressing at OTAs (for what that means). But Zimmer's is a very complicated defense, especially for the DBs. Seldom do we see a rookie playing many meaningful snaps. And Zim alluded to technical issues to clean up before Williams is ready to play in the NFL.

So, I don't think he has much value this season. If he develops, he could be a good stash for the coming years. But safeties in Zim's defense are pretty much interchangable and have to cover and tackle, so don't expect a purely "in the box" safety racking up tons of tackles, a la Kam Chancellor.

Bengals DB always seem to be more enticing on paper than on the field.

Every report I read says he's starting.

Whether or not he shines is another story. Keep in mind he's a DB, and there are a gazillion options. Only way he's on my team is as as Taxi-type.

That's what everybody hope, coaching staff included. But I will believe it when I see him on the field for the first snap of the season. For now he splits snaps with Taylor Mays.

Shawn Williams will be a nice fantasy asset next to Reggie Nelson. Beating out Taylor Mays won't be difficult, he's a one dimensional liability. You should be excited for Williams but the DB supply is plentiful.

Taylor Mays is a liability in todays passing NFL, because he doesn't have the coverage skills. He's a throw back kind of player back to the age when the SS just had to bang heads in the box to stop the run. Those days are pretty much gone and the expansion of the down the field pass catching TE means that time will never come back, so I agree that he should be able beat out Mays at some point this year or there might be a problem with WIlliams.

Spot on, MR ROURKE. Taylor Mays would have been a beast in the "Seek and Destroy" days of yesteryear. The good ol' days of ESPN airing "Jacked Up". In this two hand touch league for safties, Mays is nothing more than a special teams gunner.
