IDP training camp notes

Postby good2bjking » Sat Sep 05, 2020 7:36 am

Made a pass through recent training camp reports Thursday night for my own edification and figured I'd post notes for everyone's enjoyment. These are from beat reports with some of my own conjecture thrown in. Some of this is already outdated with cuts coming in today. Thanks for subscribing to DLF.

NYJ: Cashman and Hewitt starting ILBs. Williamson a backup. Team officially lists Zuniga as a DL, not LB.

NEP: DE Wise primed to take a step up in playing time after adding muscle and having a "terrific summer as a pass rusher." OLB Winovich has the look of the team's best pass rusher. ILB Bentley will run the front seven. Rookie ILBs Uche, Jennings have flashed and will play. S Dugger impressive - likely to have a bigger role than Phillips.

MIA: CB Igbinoghene has been a hit and is in line for significant snaps. S Brandon Jones has struggled and will play a backup role. Strowbridge has made a positive impression and is in line for a rotational role on DL.

BUF: DL Jefferson versatile enough to play both end + tackle; could garner starter-level snaps. Qualifies as a DT on MFL - value add. Epenesa will be brought along slowly and worked into DE rotations. Oliver breakout may be coming this year. DE Murphy (cap casualty), LB Joseph on roster bubble. If Poyer is hurt, Dean Marlowe is the backup SS/Jaquan Johnson the backup FS.

PIT: Highsmith looks like the real deal - likely Dupree successor. Allen being converted from S to ILB for subpackage role; don't expect bump in snaps for Vince Williams. S Brooks likely headed for practice squad. Edmunds coming around in pass coverage.

BAL: Madubuike injured knee and could be headed for short-term IR after Saturday cuts. Fort - not Board - is one of top 3 ILBs with rookies. Rookie S Stone had quiet camp - no lock for 53.

CLE: Rookie Elliott will rotate in behind Richardson, Ogunjobi. Who will get passing down work at LB - Goodson, Phillips, Takitaki? Unknown and might not learn much in opener vs. BAL as team plays more base. CBs after Ward are a mess - Greedy has shoulder, Kevin Johnson lacerated liver.

CIN: Rookie LB Wilson projected to start next to Pratt.

IND: Expect a rotation on DL. Okereke is more likely to play next to Leonard on passing downs, but will platoon with Walker in nickel/dime. S Blackmon removed from NFI.

JAC: Josh Jones expected to fill SS void in wake of Ronnie Harrison trade. 5th round pick Daniel Thomas will push Jones.

HOU: Hargreaves still looks like crap and may lose the slot CB job to impressive rookie John Reid. S A.J. Moore a camp star and is the #3 behind Reid + Murray. Other camp stars: DE Omenihu, OLB Martin.

TEN: DT Simmons still in line for breakout. Rookie CB Fulton hurt but shined before injury. S Hooker continues to get better - watch for Vaccaro cap cut before 2021.

KCC: Breeland Speaks on the trade block. Team wants to "groom" Gay; doesn't sound like he will start. Rotation at RCB during Breeland suspension.

LAC: Tillery backing up Justin Jones at 3-tech. Tranquill (WLB), Murray (MLB), White (SLB) all starters, with Tranquill + Murray playing in nickel. Starting safeties: Rayshawn Jenkins (strong), Adderley (FS).

LVR: Strong camp for Arden Key. Littleton and Kwiatkoski will play 3 downs. Randall release solidifies FS role for Erik Harris.

DEN: Justin Hollins no sure thing for 53. Optimism on rookie CB Ojemudia helped with decision to trade Yiadom to NYG.

DAL: Lawrence, Aldon Smith, Griffen all looking good. Darian Thompson will start at SS following Clinton-Dix release.

WAS: Payne, Sweat had great camps. LBs: Pierre-Louis making push to start alongside Bostic. Hamilton showed out in coverage. Holcomb played combination of LB spots; rotated with 1s. Foster a surprise Saturday cut? Apke won starting FS job from Sean Davis.

NYG: OLB Lorenzo Carter headed for a breakout. Ximines will get shot early but expect push from Golden. ILB Devante Downs a surprise and may start next to Martinez. Crowder has been strong. Connelly rounding into form. Peppers playing in box, Love deep, Ryan hybrid safety/slot CB. Rookie Holmes will also play in slot. McKinney headed to IR after Saturday cuts.

PHI: DT Jackson has been a camp stud. Josh Sweat has been impressive. Mills likely sticking as SS starter. Riley likely nickel LB next to Gerry; T.J. Edwards may supplant soon. Taylor confirmed to be a project.

GBP: Kamal Martin was to start next to Kirksey before injury. Now it will be either Burks and Summers but neither will have much FF value. With better depth at ILB Burks might be a cut candidate.

DET: Flowers looking fantastic. Shelton will make a big difference vs. run. Hand banged up again. Julian Okwara a dynasty buy. Collins will lead LBs in snaps; Davis will be utilized in blitz. Walker has been consistently running with 2s but has been best defender on field. Harmon (FS) and Harris (SS) with the 1s.

MIN: Odenigbo can get 3-tech snaps even w/Ngakoue addition. Willekes injured. Lynch disappointing - may not make 53. Hughes and Holton Hill will start at CB; Dantzler has been a camp star.

CHI: Thin DL; Hicks has been out w/quad since 8/20. Quinn (pass)/Mingo (run) will rotate at OLB. Skrine on outside in base; goes to slot in nickel w/rotation on outside. Expect Bush/Gipson rotation at SS.

CAR: Chinn will get "a bunch of snaps" at OLB next to Thompson and Whitehead. Burris as box safety. Trial by fire at CB - watch for snap counts and effectiveness. Potential streamers once we figure it out.

NOS: Rankins back to 2018 self - should be a big boost. Alonso to PUP? Baun at SLB. Nickel CB Gardner-Johnson planning to change name to Ceedy Duce.

ATL: Davidson has missed two weeks w/knee. Expect slow/no start. Fowler focused but has ankle sprain. 2019 DE Cominsky coming on; size and disruption - deep league watch list. McKinley has dropped weight and is quicker off line; focused on turning pressures into sacks. LB Walker playing w/1s, will cover TEs at times. Terrell likely to start w/Oliver. Neal back to rookie weight, moving well.

TBB: Who will play slot CB - Dean or Murphy-Bunting? CB to stream Week 1 vs. Michael Thomas. Guessing SMB.

SEA: Alton Robinson impressive and will rotate w/Collier and Green at DE. Buy Barton at some point during season; looks great as Wagner's backup. OK to quit Burr-Kirven. Blair has been impressive and will play a lot as nickel CB.

SFO: DT Street has taken step forward but expect a big rotation inside. Warner on COVID-IR; Greenlaw in concussion protocol.

LAR: Lewis has "unique" knee situation - doesn't sound good. Was going to be part of OLB rotation. Howard out for year; was going to start next to Kiser. Kenny Young gets first crack at spot over Reeder. ILB sleeper: Christian Rozeboom, rookie from South Dakota State. Coaches "incredibly impressed" w/size and movement skills. Currently working on 2nd team.

ARI: Kennard in a good spot to have depth edge value next to Jones. How will Simmons fit in at ILB w/Hicks, Campbell?

Sure! Not sure if J. Okwara will start but I don't think it matters much - he'll be part of the rotation.

This is the kind of work I would expect for IDP writers like Gary Davenport but they're only posting obvious sleepers.
it helps me choosing on some of my IDP targets and add me some confidence on other players I was following
Precious job you saved me some time
