LB Rookie Rankings - 2020

Postby lukkynumber13 » Thu May 07, 2020 8:08 pm

1. Isaiah Simmons - If Derwin James or Jamal Adams decided to play LB, here you go. You guys know the drill tho - let your leaguemates draft him at 6 or 8 or 10, while you scoop up a falling Henry Ruggs or Justin Jefferson, and then pick up this year's version of Cory Littleton off the wire :)
2. Patrick Queen is solidly ranked at #2, but notice I don't have him in a separate tier. He is the perfect LB for the modern NFL (gosh that's such a cliche now), and went to a fantastic organization that is DYING for talent and consistency at ILB. 100+ combined tackles in his rookie year, bet on that.
TIER BREAK
3. Kenneth Murray's coverage limitations may limit him to being a 70-80% player, at least this year. And then when you factor in the maddening handling of off-ball LBs that we have seen from the Chargers the last several years, ugh... you should be drafting other positions in rookie drafts anyway ;)
TIER BREAK
4. Willie Gay checks in here, as a supremely talented 2nd round pick who definitely has less-than-stellar LBs ahead of him on the depth chart. Some character concerns, for sure, and I doubt he sees the field in a starting capacity right away, but he could be an LB1 by season's end.
5. Jordyn Brooks was just the latest in a LONG line of hilariously crappy Seahawks 1st-round selections, but here we are - ans man, I'm puzzled. Is KJ Wright going to get benched? Will their 1st round rookie LB get benched?? Will KJW play SLB on early downs, and then supplant Brooks on the weak-side on passing-downs? Didn't they just draft 2 off-ball backers relatively early last year...? I don't think he will be a reliable fantasy starter until year 2, sadly.
TIER BREAK
6. Logan Wilson was a 3rd rounder, but only slightly removed from having been listed as a 2nd-round pick, obviously. Point being, linebackers taken in the first 75 picks usually end up getting at least a SHOT to prove themselves as starting caliber players. I have never loved Germaine Pratt's game, but he does have a year in the system so he probably opens the year as one starter for Cincy; one of their vets (Josh Bynes being the favorite, Jordan Evans being the underdog) will probably man the other spot for a fair bit, but Wilson could very well earn a starting nod by 2021.
7. Zach Baun was the target of a trade up, always a good sign. He played a lot off the edge in college, but is expected to play off the ball for New Orleans. There is certainly opportunity there, next to Davis!
8. Jacob Phillips was probably overdrafted, but Kirksey/Schobert/Collins have left behind a gaping hole in Cleveland, so he's worth a dart throw at the end of your rookie draft if he's there.

I'm excited by your breakdown of Gay. I was excited to get him at pick 5.11 in my rookie draft. Simmons, Murray & Queen all went in the 2nd round. I had a heck of a time picking between him and Chinn at S. Which one would you rather have? Did I do it right by picking Gay?

Good stuff! Appreciate the writeup!

In my deepest/most complex IDP league (32 team single copy, salary cap/contracts, balanced scoring, etc), I was pumped to have Queen drop to me at 1.23 (after grabbing Reagor at 1.13). I then took Kinlaw at 2.13 (just missed Epenesa going two spots earlier [start 2 DE]).

Thanks for the reply. I won't lose sleep, but it's good to get feedback so I can learn.
I was 5.11 and I was hoping Chinn would make it past 5.12 so I could scoop him off our waivers, but sure enough, he went 5.12 to a savvy owner.
Live and learn. Thanks, Lukky!

Lucky, appreciate your rankings. You're the only reason my IDP is decent at best. Hadn't seen you in a while and was hoping you'd post these.

What about Murray vs Chinn Lukky, and by how much? As you’ll see below LB’s & DB’s are very close until Top 40 in our 10 team league, so I rarely need to dip into the 40’s for players.

LB: D Jone, R Smith, D Tranquill (TS)
DB: J Adams, J Peppers, K Willis (TS)

10 Team League, Starts 2 DB’s & 2 LB’s, max 4 of each on roster.
Scoring: Top 10 Avg & falloff % from that.
Pos Avg: Top 10 // Top 20 // Top 30 // Top 40
LB: 2.08 // 85% // 77% // 68%
DB: 2.11 // 86% // 80% // 76%

Honestly if you’re only starting 2 of each, I would look hard at offense over either guy on defense.

But to answer the question, I’ll take Chinn just in case he turns into the next Landon Collins/Jon Cyprien, etc

Great job, lukky. I have an owner in my 16-tm league that took 5 of your top 6 (passed on K. Murray). He'll do well with them, but also passed on solid offensive value picks.

I gave him a mention in my DL post, because on the very small chance that he gets a DE designation, that’s the only way I’m drafting him.

Definitely a watch list guy tho, as he may be the Van Noy replacement.

I liked him for the Van Noy role, I figured he has value in round 5 or 6 for deep leagues
