How to Make Corners Viable?

Postby JPP's10thfinger » Thu Mar 21, 2019 11:56 am

We're switching our league over to IDP this year and we have a unique scoring system that I'm a huge fan of as it makes better defense players better fantasy options for the most part (Donald averaged 25ppg last year with it). The one drawback is CBs. With the scoring system we have every positions real-life talent more closely reflects their fantasy impact except at CB (Demarious Randall would've been the best CB last year). CBs also just score way fewer points than the other defensive positions.

Are their any system you all use that make this a bit better? (maybe some combo of times targeted, catches allowed, and yards allowed?) Right now passes defensed and INTs matter most.

This is essentially the system we are using:

How about if a CB plays more than 30+ snaps and doesn't put up stats he gets a bonus? CBs are tough for this sort of thing.

I like that idea, I'll start making tweaks along those lines.

Mack averaged 24 pts per game in my leagues and top corners in the 16-17 range. Had 32 score almost 215 points last season

Currently experimenting with + points for every time targeted and - points for every completion allowed.

This puts Ward, Gilmore and Humphrey all near the top with 2 points for every target and -3 for every completion, helps punish the bad CBs more.

I dont see a scoring package for that in MFL, is that something you will have to account for every week

If the rest of your league scoring is good, don't stress over CB's. It's like streaming kickers or defenses in regular FF. It happens.

CBs are very challenging to make super viable - it is mainly a streaming and situational position.

That's an interesting scoring system. So because a sack gets scored as a sack and a tackle and a tackle for loss, they are worth anywhere from 12 to 15 points each (Sack is 6 pts each, Tackle is between 2 to 3 points depending on position, and Tackle for Loss is between 4 to 6 points depending on position). If it's a strip sack, 16-19 points. A strip sack with a fumble recovery, 20-23 points. And a strip sack recovered for a TD, 30-33 points.

Meanwhile, an Interception (which is almost always scored with a corresponding Pass Defensed) is worth between 5 to 7 points, depending on position, and an Interception returned for a TD between 15 to 17 points.

I don't think there yet exists a good method of scoring Cornerbacks, using MFL or any other league hosting sites.
Here's my latest --
Forced Fumbles 4 points each
Fumble Recoveries 6 points each
Fumble Recovery Yardage 0.1 points per yard
Interceptions Caught 6 points each
Interception Return Yards 0.1 points per yard
Passes Defensed 4 points each (Bonus 2 points for CBs)
Sacked a QB 2 point for every .5
Sacked a QB Yardage 0.2 points per yard
Quarterback Hits 1 point each
Tackles for a Loss 2 points each (Bonus 2 points for CBs)
Safeties 6 points each
Number of Defensive & Special Teams TDs 6 points each
Penalties -0.5 points each
Penalty Yards -0.1 point for every 1 yard
CB Tackles 1 point each
CB Assists 0.5 points each

This is big play scoring, minimizing the importance of tackles (especially so for CBs as I don't want to reward them allowing the catch and then tackling the receiver). In exchange for giving them fewer points per tackle, I increase their pass defensed points, as that will reward the better corners. I also bump up CBs points for TFLs as that's one of the rare, certain, good tackles by a CB. Additionally, a CB getting a pass interference penalty hurts in this setup!

I also require 3 starting CBs, as the higher demand will also increase their value, even if they aren't scoring as high as other positions.

Commish of 4 leagues. Prefer full roster, IDP, salary cap, contract leagues designed to replicate the NFL GM experience as much as possible. Because THAT'S the fantasy.

Or go the other route and make them worthless. Combine them with S and make a DB position so you don't have to worry about it haha
