49ers release Bethea. Who's next at SS?

After hearing the news yesterday about Bethea, I picked up Jaquiski Tartt off waivers. Anyone have an idea if Tartt will be their man, or does Reid get a try in the box next year?

Tartt would be the next man up. Ward is unlikely but he was originally drafted as a safety. But this is all before free agency and the draft.

Ward will be the FS. That's pretty much a given. Tartt will probably get 1st crack at the SS spot but it may devolve into a timeshare like what we saw in Tenessee or Detroit last season. But even at 60-70% of snaps, the starting SS for the Niners will still carry value because 70% of Niner snaps is equivalent to 90% of a good team's snaps

Another possibility: Tartt transitions into an ILB full time and Reid gets the SS spot. Tartt is 6'1/220. Wouldn't be the craziest thing.

He's almost identical size to Bucannon, Barron, & Deion Jones. That's only a part of the puzzle obviously, but it doesn't seem too crazy

SF might be moving to a 4-3. If Tartt is to try LB, it'd have to be at the Will. Bowman still roams the middle in the bay. Lol!

Great point!! turns out he's most comparable to Bucannon from a metrics standpoint on mockdraftable too.

Welp! Looks like SF wants to get Malcolm Smith now. Assuming to play Will. Gotta love FA season.

Gotta think Tartt is SS and Reid is FS. Ward moving to safety would be plausible except then it leaves a huge void at CB.

Still not convinced the Niners will move to a 4-3 under or if they do how it shakes out for Armstead and Buckner. If they do move to 4-3 under, Tartt could hypothetically play WILL in that scheme (aka Telvin Smith). At this point in time, Tartt is the heavy favorite for SS imo

Was high on Tartt last year and he didn't do anything until the playoffs...which was a nice little boost to a struggling IDP squad. He proved to be able to make plays with a few TFLs, a sack and solid tackle numbers. I think in any format he's a solid buy low. They invested a second round pick in him, so he's got plenty of things going for him.
