Amari Cooper (Next Watkins or Lee)

Postby Bronx Bomber » Mon May 26, 2014 4:36 pm

Dominant Freshman campaign followed by a sub-par sophomore season (injury derailed?). Sounds similar to our friends Watkins and Lee (though somewhat different for Lee as he dominated as a sophomore and had a down junior year). So what's our predictions for Cooper; bounce back to solidify himself as the top WR or top 2 for 2015 or fall like Lee. I think his skills (better hands and ball skills) and measurables (clocked at 4.3* so probably a true 4.4) are better than Lee so I'd fall closer to the spectrum of him bouncing back as one of the best and an early/mid 1st round NFL pick. What say you?

According to NFL.com's Chase Goodbread, Cooper ramped up the hype machine after running blistering times in the 40-yard dash at Alabama's pro day last month, with 4.31 seconds being the fastest time recorded.

I'm sure lifeisyourcup can give us a predicted 40 time that's accurate but still this is pretty good indicator that he'll at least not fall due to combine performance.

I think he's going to kill it this year with Coker. In line for a HUGE bounce back campaign. He'll never have the height to be considered in the top-5 in dynasty but I could definitely see him ramping up to a Watkins-level of hype.

He ran a 4.44 according to my measurements. Could probably hit 4.40 if he continues to train. From the pictures I've seen of him recently, he looks to be at least 210.

On paper, he's just as good as Watkins, but still don't think he's worth a top 15 pick. Very safe player, but ceiling limited by his size. I'd say he's a BCS version of Davante Adams, who probably could have been a 1st rounder if he played in a BCS conference. Roddy White ceiling maybe.

If you're looking for a Lee comp, it's Stefon Diggs.

I agree. Cooper is much more Watkins (compact size @ 6-1ish and around 210) in that he will be limited by his height, but is otherwise a pretty complete WR. Diggs is a better Lee comparison (electric playmaker in open field).

I was meaning more production/hype/regression/bounce back type comparison as opposed to stylistic comparison. If that makes any sense.

In that case, yes, I think you'll see a bounce back to stardom. Cooper was playing through nagging injuries all season, and an emergence of DeAndrew White and Kevin Norwood allowed Cooper to be a decoy when injured as well when he was significantly less than 100%. Norwood is gone, but White is back and Chris Black should take another step. A healthy Cooper should be able to use White and Black (OJ Howard too at TE) to help ease the extra attention, and put together another strong season as a JR. QB play will be key as well.

^This^
See him getting drafted in the 20's of the first round around where guys like Roddy White/Hakeem Nicks/Kendall Wright have been selected in the past.
WR2 ceiling with a WR1 season only possible in PPR if he ends up with a large target volume like the Roddy White comparison or like Antonio Brown in '13.
