RB Pre-combine RB ratings

Postby esloan35 » Thu Dec 26, 2019 5:47 am

The 2020 Rookie class is brewing to be one of the best. This makes for a good opportunity for the DLF community to start discussing what they see in this group of rookie talent.

My early RB ratings leading into the combine:

1. Taylor
2. Entienne
3. Swift
4. Dobbins
5. Hubbard if he declares
6. Akers
7. Moss
8. Benjamin
9. Edwards-Helaire
10. Harris

6. Zack Moss - lateral ability and contact balance
7. Eno Benjamin - extremely violent and tough runner
8. China Hubbard - discount Etienne

I don't see why Hubbard is that high.
He is a very nice college back but runs against awful Big 12 defenses and has serious issues in the passing game - mostly as a blocker.
His contact balance is also far below that of Etienne.
I say back end of top 10 is reasonable but I don't love his fit in the NFL, especially compared to a more well rounded back like Akers or even Najee

Thing with Akers is i feel ive seen on twitter he could go round 3 or un-drafted.

There's always players ppl on twitter/forums seem to love but NFL teams don't.

Does that factor into anyone's rankings when you do rookie mocks or just on your own eye test for now.

My rankings are solely based off tape. I think everybody loves Akers because he’s going to be an athletic freak and they just assume he was playing on a bad team and will improve in the NFL. Not that all that isn’t true, but for me his tape still isn’t that impressive. Contact balance is above average and he’s solid as a receiver. With a good combine and draft process I could see him creeping into early day 3, but I would not be surprised at all if he fell to Round 4/5. Doesn’t mean he won’t be productive, but I don’t think he’s anywhere near on the level as Dobbins, Taylor, and Swift.

A lot will have to do with what team drafts them. I like Swift on a team that uses their RB's like KC does. If Najee Harris or Helaire land in Seattle, it bumps them up for me.

Then their is the RBBC factor to consider as well. Pro Football Focus loves Etienne. His metrics for elusiveness, speed, explosion, etc, is head and shoulders above anybody else, BUT, not so hot at blocking and has shown poor hands and route running. Limits his role.

My best bet for a three down work horse back that you can run a good chunk of the offense through is Taylor. He is complete to me. Size, power, explosive, speed, tough, reliable hands and receiver.

I think Zach Moss is being under rated and its the last time I am even going to mention his name anywhere until after my rookie drafts.

I am a trust your eyes kinda guy. So I can't leave C.E.H off board. The guy is just a football player. He is just always making plays in big games against tough opponents. It's hard to get excited about his sizzle like it is with Entienne, because he does not have any, but that kid is a lot of steak. I respect his game a lot. Super tough guy.

This is good feedback and I think helpful. The top 4 backs in Entienne, Taylor, Swift and Dobbins are getting a bunch of deserved chatter. Where they land will be key. If KC jumps early and gets one they jump up immediately. I have 1.1 in a league and love Entienne and Taylor. My brain says Taylor and football fan says Entienne, whoever lands in the best scenario will pop out.

Combine ahead will flush out some of the others past the top 4 who seem to have some quality options out there.

Watched some tape on Harris and dude has some nice hands. I can see him climbing some boards if he has a good combine and lands in a favorable spot.

Like someone said, it all matters where they land.

i still dont love Etienne, something tells me his game wont translate to the next level. Swift and Taylor are top 2 for me rn and i think everyone else (dobbins, akers, etienne) are tier 2
