Sankey or Oliver?
Sankey or Oliver?
Have an offer on the table for ether one. Who do you prefer? I like Oliver right now of course but does Sankey still have more value and upside long term? Who would you prefer?

Re: Sankey or Oliver?
Right now I like Oliver mainly because he is in a quality offense and he has a legit NFL qb. Sankey will get the carries, but I think he needs a passing attack around him to be more effective. My only issue with Oliver is what happens when Matthews is healthy? How much does that cut into his value. With your roster I'd take Sankey.

Re: Sankey or Oliver?
I'd definitely take Sankey. Oliver is the hot new toy here lately, and rightfully so with how he has played. But Ryan Mathews has also played well when healthy and I believe the Chargers will go back to him when he returns. Oliver didn't exactly fight his way to the top of the depth chart here. He happened to be the last man standing at the moment in their backfield but that will be changing soon. Way more upside the rest of this season and long term with Sankey.

The offer is Odell Beckham for ether one. Thoughts? Should I take it for ether one?

I'm just curious where all these free agent RBs are going to go exactly.
Ryan Mathews, Knowshon Moreno, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Marshawn Lynch, CJ Spiller, Demarco Murray, Justin Forsett, Ahmad Bradshaw, Mark Ingram, Matt Asiata, Brandon Bolden, Darren McFadden, Frank Gore, Roy Helu, Bilal Powell, Bobby Rainey, Jordan Todman, Lance Dunbar ALL are upcoming free agents.
These guys are going to find an extremely watered down free agent market for RBs and many will be staying with their same teams for much cheaper than they hoped. Even if Mathews does leave San Diego, chances are they go out and sign one of these other guys. Woodhead will also be back next year as well. It's a little early to assume Oliver has this job locked up this season or next season.
Re: Sankey or Oliver?
You bring up a pretty good point. There will be a plethora of RBs hitting the market. That coupled with the already declining value of RBs in general, it's going to be a disappointing FA experience for all these guys.bamafan1987 wrote:jackhuber wrote:Take Oliver all day, short term and long. But how many of those you listed are really Elite #1/Mid-#1s?
Lynch, Demarco, Gore, maybe Mathews...
Ingram, Ridley, Spiller round out the next bunch, and each one of those have a lot yet to prove.
The rest can really be readily found after the 4th round to 7th round all day long.
Imagine Marshawn Lynch in a Bronco's uniform. Dang that offense would be vicious.
But yeah. Being a Chargers fan, I've watched Oliver since pre-season and have definitely drunken the kool-aid. Oliver all day long over Sankey.
Re: Sankey or Oliver?
Check out this .gif of Oliver in College. Dude has moves and nearly always drives the tackler forward. Go watch the film on him on NFL.com from the Raiders game.

Re: Sankey or Oliver?
Sankey is still the player with much more talent. If Sankey was on the SD team with the good offense and getting 20+ touches would be doing well. If Oliver was on the Titans with the struggling offense he might not even have the speed to get back to the line of scrimmage. I like Oliver a lot but I would take the talent over situation.

They are two totally different types of runners. I would argue that Oliver is harder to bring downTitus Young's Lawyer wrote:Sankey is still the player with much more talent. Totally agree with this. Talent over situation always, especially when even the situation is going to be getting worse in a week or two.

Let's agree to disagree and meet back up in a few years to see who has the better career

My main point with this post was that we shouldn't just assume Mathews will be going anywhere with how cheap 95% of these RBs will be able to be signed. I think there's a great chance that he stays, plus Woodhead returns too next season. I also think every RB in the early part of that list would take the starting job, while most of the later ones listed would at least make a 50-50 timeshare. He's started fast but I still think there's a reason he didn't play until all three of the RBs ahead of him get injured. I think he will slow way down personally.
It's just too early to overreact and turn down guys like Sankey for him. Anyone remember Bryce Brown's two game stretch in Philly when he went insane? I'm sure tons of people overreacted and traded for him. How has that turned out?
