Biggest NFL (and thus, dynasty) Draft Busts

Postby Anteaters » Mon Apr 15, 2024 11:13 am

Came across this article today and, with the NFL and dynasty drafts right around the corner, it seemed like an appropriate title for a thread.
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/new ... -top-five/

Of the 10+1 players mentioned, I'll list the offensive fantasy positions.

9: Justin Blackmon 2012 1.05
7: Heath Shuler 1994 1.03
6: Lawrence Philips 1996 1.06
5: Charles Rogers 2003 1.02
4: Trey Lance 2021 1.03
3: Akili Smith 1999 1.03
2: Ryan Leaf 1998 1.02
1: JaMarcus Russell 2007 1.01

I think Heath Shuler should be the biggest bust, based on the amount of hype he (and Washington) received at draft time. The guy was worse than Leaf and Russell.

From the perspective of which choice damaged a team most, I think that has to go to Trey Lance. SF gave up the vault to draft him and he's given them absolutely zero. The only reason this didn't kill the team's chances at continuing to be a +.500 team is because they got equally lucky with Purdy. But Lance will go down as one of the worst picks of all time.

Some of these players are probably too far back for many of the members of the forum, but I remember getting bitten by the Lawrence Phillips hype in a redraft league way back when.

I'm not saying he's one of the worst in the NFL, but one of the most painful for Vikings fans has to be Troy Williamson. Not because many of us expected high things out of him. Most of us were furious with that selection. It's because we traded away Randy Moss for the pick to draft Troy Williamson. Just devastating.

Just a bit different than trading away Diggs to then draft Justin Jefferson. I suppose that one made up for it a bit...

I remember that Troy Williamson hype. Not MHJr level, but he was supposed to "be somebody" and turned into nobody.

I remember thinking he was massively over-drafted...was blazing fast but that was about it. And that's all it proved to be on the field as well.

He was something like a second round WR projection, based on his undeniable field stretching ability. When the Vikings drafted him, the common thread was "REACH!! Desperately trying to make up for losing Moss' speed!"

Peter Warrick was 1 of my personal failures. Such high expectations I had.

How about that Lions trade up to 12 to draft Jameson Williams? Not as much capital involved as some of these others, but still… yeesh. A guy traded in front of me in our draft that year to snipe him. Left me with …Garret Wilson.

For Dynasty purposes mixed with MFL draft capital, I gotta go with Trent Richardson

No Henry Ruggs?

Zach Wilson seems like he ought to be close to being on that list.

Art Schlichter is an oldie but a goodie

How about Ki-Jana Carter? Drafted by the Bengals first overall in 1995. Played 8 seasons—not bad, right? Career rushing yards: 1,144. Tore up his knee in his first preseason game his rookie year, and never recovered.
