Durham Smythe, TE MIA
Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
I haven't changed my mind but I feeling good about my cautiously optimistic outlook on Smythe. In a TEP league, I'd be thrilled if he ended up with Schultz level production.
I was low-key predicting Smythe would have a good week 2 game. Belichick always takes away what an offense likes most and I figured Bill would scheme a way to reduce the usage of Tyreek and Waddle. I felt there was a chance, in that scenario, for Smythe to receive a lot of targets. That possibility fell apart when Bill didn't have enough hi-quality DBs to shut down Waddle, and Mostert had a monster game.
But the volume Smythe is receiving is enough to provide a chance for a mini-breakout. I could see 600 yards this season. Not mindblowing breakout, but block-by-block building a better than expected season. Right now, better for TEP/2TE than regular TE scoring, but worth a stash either way if the rosters are deep enough.

Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
He’s been on the field for 128 snaps and has run 38 routes. His participation in the passing game is not great. He has also played 50% of ST snaps, so he’s not being seen as an integral part of the passing O. His efficiency numbers are really poor. This is not a Schultz or Hooper type TE, and I’m confused why you’re seeing him like them.Cameron Giles wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 10:02 amI don't see anything special, but TE is such a wasteland that any TE who's on the field for 97% of the snaps like he has and has good route participation is worth starting.
Call it the "Dalton Schultz" or "Austin Hooper" special.
Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
One of my favorite threads lol.
Day 3 TE
28/381 in 4 years at ND
88/809/3 in 5 NFL seasons
28 years old
Blocking TE
Subpar athleticism
Getting a majority of offensive snaps, but not routes
Still only has 6/67 in 2 games, but that would be a career pace of 51/570!

Not sure where you're getting your stats, but he ran 33 routes in Week 1 alone and has an 85% route % on top of a 98% snap share so far.Bronco Billy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 10:49 amHe’s been on the field for 128 snaps and has run 38 routes. I compare him to them, because he could simply be a compiler rather than a talent. Schultz isn't any good, but he was on the field a lot in a good offense and ran a lot of routes. That's been Hooper's reality as well peaking on a Falcons team that was constantly playing from behind and he's done nothing since leaving.
Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
Never paid attention to TE usage during the game this week, but any reason Smythe dropped to 36% snaps and Julian Hill got 78%? Looks to be Hill’s first week active.
Only noticed because Julian Hill was getting added in a couple TEP leagues.

Interesting.
No idea why, but I'll definitely have to investigate this.

Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
I just saw a couple of articles that said Smythe had hamstring problems that hampered him during the game. They continue to bother him during practice this week. Sounds like Hill might get a little more time this week, but is not a true threat to Smythe's playing time when Smythe is back to full health.

Some good sleuthing there. Explains the radical change in play time.Anteaters wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 3:05 pm I just saw a couple of articles that said Smythe had hamstring problems that hampered him during the game. Any TE on the roster is a potential threat to Smythe. He's a replacement level player.

Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
the dolphins offense has 1600+ total yards, 1000+ passing. smythe had 82 yards in total. other TEs had 0. this offense is not going to feed replacement level TEs (and why would they?). if they sign a good TE, then maybe. but a TE that barely cracked 800 yards in five seasons isn't going to be fantasy productive all of a sudden.
Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
I figured if they weren't going to use Gesicki as a weapon, they would never use a TE.killer_of_giants wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 2:46 am the dolphins offense has 1600+ total yards, 1000+ passing. smythe had 82 yards in total. other TEs had 0. this offense is not going to feed replacement level TEs (and why would they?). if they sign a good TE, then maybe. but a TE that barely cracked 800 yards in five seasons isn't going to be fantasy productive all of a sudden.

This is a good point. But I still want to grab any piece of this offense that I can if I have the roster space.

Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
Jeff Wilson is probably free. I like him as a stash if Mostert or Achane get hurt

Re: Durham Smythe, TE MIA
Alternatively, it could be that Hill is an UDFA from a small school and is getting up to speed enough to bypass Smythe - which is not a high bar to overcome.Pac_Eddy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 3:33 pmSome good sleuthing there.
