Kendricks

In the next few days I have to make a decision on whether to franchise tag Kendricks or not. He’s currently tied with Smith and Wagner, who are both also on my team, as the highest paid LBs in our league.

So, by franchising Kendricks, that would technically make him the highest paid LB. This is for team 1 in my sig, I’ve made the championship 4 out of the last 5 years and won it 3 of those times, including this past season.

My salary cap situation is good enough that I don’t mind having to pay a little more for him to keep my LB core intact.

The argument against franchise tagging him though is that if I don’t, he goes to free agency, and there’s a good chance I can sign him for less. There’s no guarantee though.

Long story short, I’m trying to figure out what to make of his signing with the Chargers, see if anyone has any thoughts on that, and then see if anyone has any thoughts on whether to franchise tag him or not.

he's slowed down, and he'll likely be behind drew tranquill. unless they want him to take his role, that means 2/3rds of the snaps. not what you want from a player you're gonna tag.

EDIT: actually, tranquill is FA (thought he had another year) so he's out. that means kendricks should be the man: i think he'll struggle in real life, but should have one more season of LB2 production. i still wouldn't tag him tho, would look for someone cheaper at a fairly replaceable position (depending on the league).

Yeah, I agree, the main thing for me is that I know I can go after him in FA and get him back for less than he would cost to tag, or I can go after another LB depending on who is available. I like him too for another year, but I don’t think I can justify making him the highest paid LB in our league.

Short term production should be solid. If you can stomach that then he could lay off.

The idea of having him as the highest paid LB doesn’t feel good though. It would be overpaid, and one would think the dollars could be better spent.

If you put him to FA, and the bar is whether someone else is going to make him the highest paid in the league or not (for you to get savings), I would probably take that risk. It won’t feel good for anyone else to want to do that either. That said, that’s just at face value. League dynamics may make it seem more reasonable/realistic than it sounds.

Kendricks finished as the LB14 overall in our league this year. I don’t yet know what the FA market is going to look like for LBs in our league, and I have to make the decision by 10pm tonight, but I can’t imagine that our league is going to want to make him the highest paid LB. And certainly not much more than that if they do, so I think going after him in FA is the way to go here the more that I talk it through. Worst case I think is that I get him back for about what it would cost to franchise him, if not a little less. Or I can get someone comparable for a little less. Either way it leaves me with more options.
