Let's talk... JuJu Smith-Schuster

Postby Shcritters » Tue Jul 11, 2017 10:21 am

Would have been in the conversation for the top WR last year, and then followed it up with a down year this year. Then there's the whole 'USC WR' thing... which Lee shook a little bit last year, but one year does not buck a trend. I've got the 1.10 and the 2.10 this year... 1.10 seems a little early and I doubt he lasts to 2.10.

Where do you value him and why?

If you feel that he is supremely talented and that Martavis Bryant may not be with PIT long-term, then 1.10 is not too early. Get your guys. ADP is only a guide.

What he said. 1.10 is exactly where JuJu went in my league's rookie draft. There are some "experts" out there saying take him as early as 1.07. If you want him and he's available, take him.

Agree, if you like him, 1.10 wouldn't be a reach. He's usually going late 1st, early 2nd in most drafts. As for the USC thing, every year I tell myself that this is finally going to be the guy that breaks the trend, but so far no luck.

I thought he looked fine albeit average on tape. However that's not necessarily a bad thing. I thought Diggs looked rather average and he turned out to be a very good pro. I think Juju could certainly turn into that type of player. Carroo was pretty average too from what I remember and so far he's a disaster. It's really hard to determine how a player will transition to the NFL sometimes. Spending the 1.10 on him is fine because there aren't many other players that most want in that area, it's just that I personally wouldn't do it because it's just too much of a coin-flip (I realize the pick is in coin-flip range though). I don't dislike him but I don't love him either.

Basically feel the same way. I'd personally probably wait until early 2nd to take him because there are just that many other players I think I prefer to him...just not sure he's lasting that long on average.

Juju went 2.09 in my 2QB, 10 Man Draft: where the top 3 QBs went before and guys like Hunt, Perine, Kamara, Foreman and the TE also went before.

I definitely would have drafted Juju if he fell me to 3 picks later, though, there is somewhat of a catch-22... He goes to a situation with a much better QB than Agholor, Lee and Woods but you also wonder if Big Ben hanging it up is a legitimate possibility and if Bell leaves what happens to that team?

Obviously a lot of "ifs" there.

It looks like I didn't start this thread off with clear direction (my bad!). I wasn't necessarily trying to understand if 1.10 was too early for JuJu, but more 'what do we like or have concerns about with him?' I look at guys like him and Godwin... both look to have landed in spots where they won't be immediate #2 WR's (best case #3 unless someone gets hurt or suspended), so who do you choose and why? If either of those guys got dropped into a different spot where they were immediately the #2 or 1B I think they would be much higher in rookie drafts.

I'm not looking for immediate drop in value (Zay Jones for instance), but rather for the long term. I think both of those guys have more value than Jones long term and likely more upside than guys like Ross. Am I off?

I should preface by saying I was/am a huge fan of Godwin's going into my draft. I was sitting at the 1.09, looking at guys the experts and ADP say I should consider. I believe it was Ross, J2S2, and Kamara. But I liked Godwin better than all of them (and the last time I went with my gut over ADP, I got ARob), and I didn't project him to be taken until around 10 spots later. So I traded out of the first round of a 24 teamer. Once Godwin had fallen to when I thought he was a value, I started sending trade offer to jump back into the 1st. No luck for a while. But I was eventually able to snag him at the 1.24 ...

If you like J2S2, get him. But if you are interested in a guy who is cheaper, in a similar situation, and has higher upside, take a look at Godwin.

As far as J2S2, many bring up the stacked offense he will get to play in. But I think it's vey possible that he doesn't see meaningful snaps until a year or two from now, when Ben will likely be gone or less effective. Then you have who at QB? Landry or Dobbs. And I'm not sure either is the answer there. Just something to consider.

There are 8-10 guys I could see a reasonable owner having as their next best player after the top 6, and JuJu is one of them. So I don't think 10 is a reach at all.

Comparing him to other 2nd and 3rd round WRs, he has a higher ceiling and lower floor compared to Zay Jones. He has a similar situation to Godwin, but with a better chance to go off year 1 due to either MB screwing up again or just playing with Ben. Godwin definitely has the better long-term situation, but it might be a couple years before DJax drops off. I like him better to produce year 1 than Golladay or Williams, and Samuel seems likely to be used in non-fantasy friendly ways.

I'd still take Ross over any of those guys, but I don't have a lot of conviction in how I am separating JuJu, Ross, Godwin, Jones, etc.
Dynasty player since 2002.
I probably should have done something more productive with that time...

No idea how someone could come to conclusion that Smith-Schuster has a higher upside than John Ross. Touchdowns? Dalton? I can see a floor argument on Ross given his knees, but his upside is OBJ.

As for Smith-Schuster, I look at Lee as the superior college player, so I find it difficult to believe that Smith-Schuster will be the guy to break the negativity on USC receivers. Maybe Bryant relapses, but Coates could just as easily build on the promise he was showing prior to breaking his hand last year.
