16 team Dynasty Superflex strategy

Postby Riverad98 » Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:25 pm

I’m just joined a 16 team Dynasty Superflex TE Premium startup. I’ve played in 12 team leagues but this is my first 16 team league. How does the draft strategy differ for the 16 team league? Do I take QBs with my first two picks no matter what or see how the draft plays out? Also, the draft order is determined derby style so, if I have the choice, should I pick an early pick to get a top tier QB or a later pick to get two mid tier QBs? Anything else I should look out for? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I’ve done several SF startups but never a 16.

My advice is, properly value QBs. It’s possible that the rest of your league won’t follow suit, and you’ll be the only one stockpiling em, but even worst case there is fine imo (you end up with “too many” QBs)

Depends on draft slot some for more specific advice, but for starters, Mahomes and Jackson are far and away 1.01, 1.02, and Watson and Wilson are unquestioned first rounders, etc.

Edit: for draft slot selection, I’d want 1.02, then 1.01, after that I think I’d prefer something mid
main league, half PPR, all TDs 6, -3 for INT
12 team. 2019 champ, 2020 runner up, ‘21 3rd
start 2SF, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2WRT

QB: T Lawrence, K Cousins, R Wilson, Z Wilson
RB: K Walker, T Ettiene, JK Dobbins, D Gore, J Hasty, D Johnson, L Rountree
WR: JJ, AJB, A Cooper, Juju, C Kirk, J Dotson, N Westbrook-Ikhine, I McKenzie
TE. T Kelce, Pitts, Albert O, D Parham, J O’Shaunessy

I easily take QBs with my first two picks, maybe even first three depending on how the draft goes, and probably at least three in the first four picks. My other/next pick is a TE.

I would strongly advise you to not set firm rules for any draft. I think the biggest mistake owners make in superflex leagues is reach for QBs that don't have a proven record and long term stability.

It is possible to win a superflex league with only 1 starting QB. It's also possible to acquire veterans like Fitz, Brady, etc. at reasonable costs throughout the season. Focus on maximizing value for each pick and if the other owners are dying to trade up and have the mindset that they need to go QB with their first two picks, use that to your advantage.
QB: D. Watson, T. Taylor, J. Driskel, J. Johnson, C. Rush, N. Sudfeld, M. White
RB: C. McCaffrey, C. Carson, K. Johnson, R. Penny, J. Samuels, D. Pumphrey
WR: J.J. Smith-Schuster, R. Woods, L. Fitzgerald, J. Nelson, M. Gallup R. Switzer, B. Berrios, C. Batson, R. Higgins, J. Kearse
TE: G. Kittle, I. Thomas, J Doyle, W. Dissly, J. Leggett, J. Gresham, T. Conklin

I agree, if it’s outlandish...like cmc is available at 1.12 because 11 QBs went 1-11. But unless the scoring is weighted against QBs, it’s tough to be in a lg that big where 16-32 QBs will be starting every single week and not put a priority on them.

I would lean very heavily toward going qbs often and early but this really comes down to how your draft shakes out

Agreed I would love to follow along as well. I’d have a very hard time not going qb qb. If others aren’t going qb I’d try and trade down a bit from my 2nd and scoop QBs.

Thanks for the input.

We are voting on some stuff today and then should get the draft started soon. The part I’m most unsure of is the draft order since it is derby style and the rookie draft is the inverse order of the startup draft. If given the choice, would I be better off taking a late round pick which would give me an early rookie pick ( startup pick #16 would give me rookie picks 1.01, 2.16, 3.01 & 4.16) or choose an early round pick to lock in a top tier QB but miss out on the top rookie picks ( startup pick #1 would give me picks 1.16, 2.01, 3.16 & 4.01)?

There’s also some bonus scoring:
6 point passing TD
1 point TE Premium.
1 point bonus for 40+ Yard completion, 40+ Yard Rush or 40+ Yard Reception.
2 point bonus for 40+ Yard Passing, Rushing or Receiving TD.

I’ll share the draft info once we get started.

This is where I would want to be in this format. If everyone goes QB round 1, it will push value to the bottom. Spend 1 of those picks on best available QB and hopefully Kittle. Then you get Burrow.

I’d go for the 16th pick, take two QBs back to back, and then take Burrow at the 1.01. Setting you up for years to have three good young QBs. I’m thinking some combo of Wentz, Allen, Mayfield, maybe Murray if you’re lucky and then Burrow.

I ended up with the 3rd pick in the Derby. If the first two teams go with 16 & 15, I think I will take the 14th which would give me either the top rookie RB or top 2 rookie QB.

HUGE advantage if you get the 15 or 16 pick to start. Horrible way to do a startup btw.

Id still take the 14th if 15 & 16 are gone.
