So I have loved this kid ever since watching him tear up the buckeyes secondary(Denzel Ward) and watching him make one handed grabs left and right. How did he go undrafted? think he is easily better than any of the 3 wr the packers drafted. Am I over reacting to the hype or is he for sure worth a draft pick?

I also cant wrap my head around this, very good tape, good size. Looked the par, I guess we see if he makes the final cuts, as a guy who has season tickets for IU, I'm rooting for him for sure

I was surprised he did not get drafted along with Deontay Burnett (USC) to a lesser degree. Like Cobbs, but worried drafting him will end up being a waste like good 'ol Garrett was from Tulsa a couple years ago. UDFA are a hard pick to hit on, unless a deeper rookie draft.

lands on the Redskins, the particulars:

Crowder: Contracts up in 2019
Doctson: Contracts up in 2020
Richardson: Contracts up in 2021
------------------------------------------
M. Harris: Managed to stick for the past few years
Robert Davis: Small school size athlete developmental weapon.
Brian Quick: A size option.
------------------------------------------
Draftees and UDFA's from 2018 in order of plaudits:
Trey Quinn
Simmie Cobbs
Shay Fields
Mikah Holder
Demornay Pierson-El
Martez Carter (RB/WR)

Cam Sims
Ryan Markush

That's a lot of guys. Harris is the guy who had the insane catch I think against Minnesota last year. A Cal alum, he's actually got absurdly good hands, but isn't athletic. Robert Davis is the freak athletically but a developmental guy, everyone already knows about Brian Quick. In terms of the drafted guys and the UDFA's, it sounds like the only guys with a chance of making the roster are Quinn, Cobbs, Fields and Carter.

Honestly, being a Redskins fan, looking at Cobbs profile, I would try to pull off what they did a half decade ago when they drafted Nebraska WR Niles Paul and converted him into a TE.

Paul's and Cobb's profile from playerprofiler:

Paul: 6'1" 241
Cobbs: 6'2" 220

Forty:
Paul: 4.51
Cobbs: 4.63

Burst Score:
Paul: 60th percentile (not sure if they rejiggered it to TE's, or kept it for WR's which would change the percentile)
Cobbs: 2nd Percentile

Agility Score:
Paul: 96th percentile
Cobbs: 72nd percentile

Catch Radius:
Paul: 72nd Percentile
Cobbs: 30th Percentile

Dominator:
Paul: 70th percentile
Cobbs: 49th percentile

Breakout Age:
Paul: 81st Percentile
Cobbs: 68th Percentile

SPARQ-x:
Paul: 95th percentile
Cobbs: 11th percentile

Kinda reminds you how athleticism doesn't matter if you can't stay healthy. Little known fact, Jordan Reed lost the starting job to Niles Paul back in 2015, then Paul was lost to a season ending injury in August, and Reed won the job back. A big "What if" in terms of the Redskins, Paul and Reed. Who knows, maybe Reed stays healthy if he loses the job that year. Maybe Paul becomes a thing. The roads not taken.....

Anyway, I'd prefer the Redskins to try and turn Cobbs into a "move" TE because honestly, he's just flat out not athletic enough or fast enough to probably be an effective WR in the game, but in a TE role? I think he could be another Reed/Niles Paul. I think he could be something at the NFL level, I'm just not sold it's a WR, unless he was a converted slot guy a la Matthews, but I don't think he fits that necessarily either.

You can probably get Cobbs in free agency after the draft. I wouldn't waste a pick, but if he's your guy get him. Anything's possible, but he doesn't exactly have some incredible profile for an undrafted WR.

I'm becoming less & less excited about big bodied WRs. I used to break ties in favor of the jump ball guys. Now I tend to break ties in favor of smaller, shiftier guys who can run routes.

Agreed. There's less 1 on 1 50/50 balls these days. Slot guys are dominating with the rule changes and just how incredibly quick some of these guys are.

Used to love a guy like Sutton. Now I see a stiff route runner who showed no twitch ability.

I say that, and yet in this most recent rookie draft I've taken J'Mon Moore & Jaleel Scott because they fell like crazy. It's a full IDP league, and Moore fell to the 6th and Scott fell to the 10th! I'll take the value there.

A guy like Cobbs will most likely be available in FA. If anything (imo) you hold of on even rostering him until he makes the final round of cuts, even then he could be PS'd and you can keep him on a watch list.

But like the above poster said, if he's your guy, go get him.

because a handful of eye popping one handed catches doesn't constitute a good prospect. See Mike Williams and Kelvin Benjamin

Cobbs didn’t get drafted because he cannot get open. He won some 50/50 balls in college because of his size, but he also gets pinned to the sideline and ends up out of bounds frequently. Cobbs doesn’t have the quickness or ability to sink his hips and get open consistently at the nfl level.

A guy like J’Mon Moore is a far better prospect because he has good size and shows the necessary route running ability at times, but also has the body control to make the tough catches. Being drafted by the team with Aaron Rodgers certainly helps. Moore is criminally underrated imo.

Except those 2 have been stud prospects, but yes your initial point is correct.

- some bad workout scores, other than the 3-cone
- his third collegiate season regressed severely from his second
- might be issues with him medically, considering the sharp regression in '17 after the ankle injury in '16
- his tape showed plenty of flaws; struggles against press, lack of separation against man coverage, too easily knocked off his routes

He was graded as a late Day 3 pick, so it's not shocking that he went undrafted.

Ehh he’s a slow jump ball WR who only runs about 3 routes.
