As long as we all agree Montana was no better than the 4th best QB of his generation and no better than the 15th greatest QB of all time, I'm okay with that comparison.

Probably a LeBron James is the GOAT kind of a guY who thinks modern sports started in the 2000's and can prove it because of the overall numbers. Saying Montana is the 15th best QB for all times is ludicrous.

Montana started the 49er's dynasty and played in tbe pre-salary cap era.Great teams were able to stay great and he had to beat some all time great teams to earn his Championships. They could go out of their way to bludgeon the QBs of his era. They could also literally knock out your receivers w/o receiving a penalty. Passing numbers were much harder to earn. Playing beat up most weeks was a given & he still came through in the clutch . Joe has endured 25 surgeries from playing in that era. Only if you watched how well he performed at the crucial moments can you appreciate how he stood out from the rest. Numbers don't come close to telling the whole story

San Fran was a 2-14 team when he started. He wasn't handed a powerhouse roster. Four for Four in Super Bowls and got a raw deal towards the end of his SF tenure or he likely would have one or two more
