Not sure. Carr seems to have similar strengths to Rich Gannon, so it's possible. That said, no idea if Gruden will employ the same system or if it will even work at this point.

Uhm, he didn't walk away and become a monk. He has spent his time breaking down tape of both college and nfl games pretty much year round, I don't see how anything has passed him by. You think firing a coach, and likely a GM as well, a year after going 12-4 in order to hire a guy that's been working in the broadcast booth for several years is a good idea?

I wasn't so sure about them chasing Gruden... Until someone here suggested Chip Kelly. If that's how shallow the pool is, give me Gruden! LOL

Re: Jon Gruden
I feel like Gruden's announcing position and platform masqueraded his effectiveness as a coach. Sure he won a Super Bowl, but he didn't do a whole lot after. He also isn't known for having really good offenses. He's not a bad coach by any means, but ever since leaving the sidelines, he's developed his reputation as an elite coach.
This hire strikes me as a splash just to make a splash.

Re: Jon Gruden
I agree. And I was also thinking about how Gruden's Super Bowl win in Tampa Bay wasn't all that impressive considering they had an elite defense from the moment he walked into the building. Additionally, Bill Callahan didn't even bother changing Gruden's offense when he took over the Raiders, so Gruden knew exactly what the Raiders offense was going to do on every play in that game. It was laughable.Cameron Giles wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 1:16 pm I feel like Gruden's announcing position and platform masqueraded his effectiveness as a coach. Re: Jon Gruden
Chip Kelly coaches at ucla...big deal. He was terrible on the nfl.
Re: Jon Gruden
Big difference between getting kids ready for the draft and prepping for a MNF game each week compared to running an entire team, especailly one that is in the middle of a move to Vegas. Comparing Gruden to Kelly is more about the name reconigition they would provide over coaching ability. Gruden was a better coach but if he didn't have ties to the Raiders this would be laughed at. I doubt he wins more than 9 games in any of the next three years before he decides to retire again.thebeast wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 9:24 amUhm, he didn't walk away and become a monk. Re: Jon Gruden
What always amazes me is how struggling NFL franchises rise and have a magical season when they desperately need a new stadium only to often revert to their old status once stadium deal gets inked . Gruden hire is more about style over substance and he always whined about never having a solid qb , while carr is an unfinished product if gruden doesn't have a prolific offense/ lots of success then he will quickly lose interest and wind up back in the booth somewhere. Unlike many coaching lifers he has peeked behind the curtain of life without football and it treated him quite well. I personally think this will be a spectacular failure of train wreck proportions.

Re: Jon Gruden
In fairness, the team he left (and its worth noting he was traded by that team. He didn't just up and jump ship to try and get an easy Superbowl) also ended up in that same Superbowl and it's entirely possible he would've won that same Superbowl had he stayed in Oakland.

Also worth noting he averaged 9.5 wins in Oakland with that group of scrubs. He has arguably a top five defensive player, a skilled qb, good line, skilled wr, he will in games.
