Better DB, Safety or Corner?

Postby Niceguy » Mon Sep 02, 2013 9:16 pm

This might seem like a basic question to most, but are Safeties generally more consistent/reliable than CBs to play in a DB spot? I have Cortland Finnegan but I'm tempted to replace him with Harrison Smith who is on the waiver wire. I'm wondering if he will be a more consistent producer being that he is a safety and will probably register more tackles on a consistent basis. Any comments/suggestions?

Absolutely yes. Safeties are much more consistent point producers in most scoring formats as they will consistently produce higher tackle numbers as well as higher interception totals. Harrison Smith being on the wavier wire is crazy. Yes - drop Finnegan and go get Harrison Smith asap!

I agree with the above, H.Smith is worth more imo, that being said, I rate them like this...
1st-strong safety(generally in the box and play as somewhat of an extra LB)
2nd-below average starting CBs that are sound tacklers(they get targeted often)
3rd-good cb that are good tacklers(someone like L.Webb or Finnegan, he rarely gets thrown to yes, but is all over the field and not scared to sacrifice his body to make a play)
4th-free safety-(usually not involved unless it's a deep pass or the ball carrier makes it all the way through everyone else, hence not enough tackle opportunities)
Harrison Smith is listed as a free safety, but some teams aren't that black and white, really depends on the personnel. He was all over the field last year making plays and there are exceptions to every rule...same as a strong-side LB(usually not idp produtive) but for some reason Chad Greenway always is...maybe it's a Vikings thing lol, I'm not sure

Typically:

1. SS

2. Cover2/Tampa2 CB
3. FS or CB playing opposite an elite CB

4. CB

5. shut down elite CB

I also agree...with the only exception being leagues where there is scoring for return yardage. In those leagues, a Patrick Peterson, McCourty (NE),...have added value.

WRs also have added value in these leagues. Cobb, Antonio Brown,...
2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 RB/WR, 1 TE, 1 LB, 2 DL, 2 DB, 1 K. 0.5ppr, TD 6pt, 1pt/10yd rush/receive, 1pt/25 yd pass/ret

QB: Luck, R. Wilson, Bridgewater, Mettenberger, G. Smith
RB: Forte, Ellington, L. Miller, CJ Anderson, C. Michael, Crowell
WR: Julio, Gordon, Cobb, A. Brown, A. Robinson
TE: Julius Thomas, Kelce, Cameron
LB: tbd
DL: Quinn, Dunlap
DB: Iheldigo, tbd
K: Bryant

Agreed, but don't really worry too much about DB. You can easily field a good starting econdary off waivers each week.
