D. Hixon signs with Carolina

Postby general mills » Thu Apr 04, 2013 7:20 am

Panthers agreed to terms with WR Domenik Hixon, formerly of the Giants, on a one-year contract.
Per CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the Browns were also "very interested." Joining Chase Blackburn, Hixon is the second ex-Giant new Panthers GM Dave Gettleman has signed away from his former team in as many weeks. All the way back from the second tear of his right ACL last season, Hixon caught 39 passes for 567 yards and two touchdowns as he played extensive snaps in place of a banged-up Hakeem Nicks. Also a capable return man, Hixon adds credibility to a Panthers receiver corps that remains thin on experienced talent behind Steve Smith. Hixon is much better than 2012 third receiver Louis Murphy and could wind up pushing Brandon LaFell for snaps.

Thoughts? I would like to think that anyone who plays opposite to S. Smith and having Cam throw it to him should put up decent numbers.

Meh. If you're in a crazy deep league, maybe. I still think they're going to draft a WR in the first three rounds.

Yeah, I am in a 12 team league with 28 player rosters...I like this signing. Even if they do draft a WR early then that just means more weapons for Cam, and SS1 doesnt have much time left.

Most leagues I play in are at least 12 teams and 35 or more roster spots.

Gettis hasn't stayed healthy. Murphy didn't do much last year. Lafell was supposed to be a sleeper last year and didn't do much either.

Another bla WR added to the mix. I think Murphy is better than him.

Seems like insurance move in case the draft doesn't fall quite the way they want it to. No reason to be handcuffed in to making a pick you don't like if your a GM.

Good signing for Cam, and a little for Smith. Not much fantasy value for Hixon himself, however.

They are taking a WR in Round 1 or Round 2 - I think this is probably just a Plan B (really like a Plan G) in case they don't have a chance to get what they want.

I agree with the masses on this one. The #2 WR in the Panthers' offense with Newton tossing the ball might excite me, but Hixon is not that guy even if they don't draft a WR early.

I'd have Hixon fourth among Carolina WRs right now. I don't think this is notable.

Any chance we see any value out of Hixon now that we know how the draft panned out? Would you rather pass on him in favor of a lesser-known rookie sleeper such as Charles Johnson (GB) or Tavarres King (DEN)?
