Who is this year's Puka?
I've been having a lot of discussions about Puka lately, and thought I'd ask, "So, who is this year's Puka?" What does that mean? To me, it's a WR you can get in the 4th round, a flier, that can be an elite player. Who is your guy?
I have two names, but there are probably a few
Cowing
MWashington
You?

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
Close to every year there's an Amon Ra, Diggs, Purdy, Kittle and now Puka who blows up their Day 3 pedigree and becomes pretty good or elite. Then the year after people start retrofitting their college numbers to act like it was right in front of us the entire time.
Chasing dragons isn't a science.
I honestly have no idea. Cowing could be a slow burn steal, but he also has no path to production. You could probably name just about anyone and not necessarily be wrong.

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
CG is right. There's no way you're going to find another Puka.
I was really high on ARSB that year but he was still only my WR7 and that still wasn't high enough. Loved the FR breakout and the solid tape he put out. Had him above Toney and all the 3rd rd WR (Nico was the only hit), but still had ARSB behind Terrace Marshall

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
First of all, don't listen to these losers. If you have a 4th round pick and you use it, you are in fact Chasing Dragons.
We all wanna find the Puka.
Brendon Rice
Don't over draft. But if you have a 4th, add him.
With 7th round draft capital, nobody will be taking him above the 4th.
In that WR room, he could get an opportunity where other guys you take in the 4th won't even get an opportunity. And Opportunity is the first factor in finding a Puka.

Every 4th round player is a flier. The guy that stood out, but IDK if he's a flier/sleeper is Conley being the YAC king. I'm talking about analytics. Cowing was another guy that had elite analytics. Puka had elite YPRR (2.75). Look at this—

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
Does Malachi Corley fit with this discussion? He was the 1st pick in round 3 of the NFL draft and currently a late 2nd / early 3rd rookie pick in SF.
All day 1 and day 2 NFL drafted players are on my radar. That is the list I start with.

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
This is a little misleading. Corley's career YPRR is 2.22. Also, a significant amount of his production came from screens and he has one of the lowest aDOTs in the class. 51.4% of his career receptions are from screenswickerkat1212 wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 8:31 am Every 4th round player is a flier. Nobody. This doesn't happen every year.

1. There's no science to it
2. Using stats Puka did well in to retrofit has too much hindsight bias.
So, really it could be any player or it could be none of them. I don't think it makes you a loser for being logical and understanding that.

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
Impossible to know but a Dark Horse WR that may outplay his draft position is Troy Franklin.
He gets to play catch with his college QB and familiarity could make a big difference with a young accurate rookie QB.

Re: Who is this year's Puka?
If Amon-Ra St Brown counts, then Troy Franklin gets my vote too. Both were well-liked by the fantasy community pre-draft, got worse than expected NFL draft capital, but didn’t fall in dynasty rookie drafts by as much.
If it needs to be players you can get in the 4th round of your rookie draft, then no one.
