Talk Me Into This

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Talk Me Into This

Postby bigbuck22 » Tue Mar 12, 2024 12:49 am

Team in sig- flexible lineups, start 10

Won the championship this last year so I'm sitting pretty good as it is although there are a couple of strong teams right there with me.

Receive: McCaffrey, Kelce, Mayfield
Give: 1.03

On the surface, it's probably a smash accept. I'm hesitant because I think it's very possible this time next year, things look very different.

CMC will turn 28 in June... Kelce may be retiring soon and is he an upgrade to Engram... Mayfield is probably at his peak and while he could help me, am I upgrading much?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

For a win now team, I approve of this trade. There is a measure of risk involved, but there's also risk in drafting a rookie QB.

I'm not 100% all in on the deal in all situations, but I don't hate it at all.

Right. Only reason not to do this deal is rookie FOMO (which is very real)

Think of it this way instead. On average, how many top-end seasons would you get from the guy you'd draft at 1.03. Maybe 2-4 on average? Some bust, some are elite, and some are guys like Joe Mixon -- a couple of great seasons and some good ones. So you're getting on average a handful of good seasons from that player.

Now, let's say -- worst-case scenario -- each of the three players you're getting retires after 2024. You're STILL getting three top-end seasons from the trio, and all are bunched together in a stack-the-deck season for a 'ship. Add onto it that I doubt any of the three is done or without value in 2025+.

And, I say this with a smile: if you weren't convinced when you first saw the offer (smash-accept) or after reading this thread, we can't help you :) :).

This is a good way to think of it.

Devils advocate... insert these three into my lineup. Who am I sitting then? Does the difference between my new starters and who I bench plus the ages of the new additions really make sense to add when I'm a true contender without them?

You'll need more than just starters throughout the season...

Happy to have Engram and one of Walker/Jones on the bench in favor of Kelce and CMC. And happy to have Mayfield on the bench, too. All those players will be in the lineup multiple times. You don't want to have to scramble in-season to replace players -- you'll pay more in the aggregate than you would here given the insane value of protecting three positions.

-------

Two other thoughts regarding the bolded above:
1) I'd MUCH rather stack the deck than be a true contender. More weapons is better!
2) If you don't trade for these players, someone else will. Again, I'd rather a great player be on your bench than in the other team's lineup.

Ya the point is to win. It’s a close trade. Most teams would take 1.3 but most teams aren’t champions.

For you, the value is in the win now assets, where the rookie piece is either hit or miss or developmental. Go win!

Do the math on how it’d affect your weekly scores from last year. I’m guessing CmC + Kelce alone helps your weekly scoring quite a bit. And I’d personally think Baker is gonna be better than Watson too
12 team. PPR. QB pass td = 6
Starters: QB(1) FLEX (RB/WR/TE)(2) RB(2) WR(3) TE(1)

QB: AR, DJones
RB: Gibby, Charb, KMiller, Akers
WR: Chase, Lamb, G Wilson, Tank Dell, Burks, Mimsy, Tutu, W Robinson, Tucker, Wicks, RBell
TE: DNjoku, Hunter Henry

Draft Picks: 2024: 1.2, 1.5, 1.11. 2025: 1st Round (2) 2nd Round (1), 2026: 1st Round (1) 2nd Round (2)

How competitive is your roster compared to the league? If you are a clear contender, I think the trade makes a ton of sense. The goal is to win leagues, and sometimes to do that we have to take chances on vets. It could also work out that CMC and Baker are starters for you for 3-4 years, In which case you won't care who you could have had at 1.03.

Also, consider this - can you turn around and flip CMC into a stud WR? Can you make a play for JJ or ARSB with him as the centerpiece? Explore that option too. CMC should still be a very attractive piece for contenders.
