Definitely the worst game he has played. He missed a few easy ones.

Purdy was 12th last year in completion percentage on passes with 20+ air yards. Elite…no. Bad…no.

His game yesterday wasn’t good in that area, but it’s one game. I see in other threads people wanting to pump the brakes about certain narratives as the season is only two games in…maybe we should here too. Especially as we’ve already seen him better.

If I remember correctly... didn't Purdy have a small injury this offseason? Maybe something that kept him out of training camp to a significant extent? Maybe one that would impact his ability to throw deep? My memory is hazy...

2nd game of the season coming off of a major surgery and having missed almost all of camp. He gets a pass from me early this season - he's been just fine through two games which is all I needed to see at this point to feel really good getting him around QB20 this offseason in multiple leagues.

He tied a 49ers record for consecutive games with 2+ TD passes in 7 or 8 games. And it was his first 7 or 8 games.

Another week, another round of Purdy haters.

300+ yards and 2 TDs, again for Purdy.

No love yet. Will there ever be?
So “workmanlike” impressive, he must be an incredibly smart guy, just simply/quickly reads coverage/field, and pulls trigger instantly with insane hit rate on correct read/decision, Almost like Shanny is playing in Purdy’s body.
Pulling this from a different thread...

I like this statement, and think that's what Shanny wants. He's looking for someone who can execute what he wants with the weapons around them. Purdy isn't all that special physically/mentally (ala Mahomes, Allen, Jackson), but is able to translate what Shanny wants onto the field which makes him a perfect fit for that system.

I don't think he does nearly as good anywhere else other than SFO... but IN SFO he's nearly perfect.

He's missing easy points for an "elite" QB.

So while he is playing well, I'm going to say NO, to the idea he's elite right now, Mike. Congrats on the win. 8-)
He had to go through recovery on his elbow, and in the process he worked with a team to generate a quicker throw. The result is that some of his passes now go too deep, as evidenced a couple weeks ago and the week before that. He'll be working on his timing all season. He only looks bad on deep throws because his mechanics have actually improved, and now he needs to adjust to an improved throwing motion.

I read about this and tried to find the link, but it's lost and even Google isn't helping me. It's partially the reason he didn't go deep much vs NY (2 throws over 20, plus it was windy in the first half).

He'll be fine.

Not sure if this is it, but it goes pretty in depth on his rehab.

Anybody see the beautiful pass to CMC that was dropped for a TD. He never drops those. Should have been an even bigger game for our boi BP.

Yup, saw that also. Perfectly placed... CMC had the ball, but the defender made a great play and looked like he stripped it. Either way, CMC usually makes those catches, and Purdy put the ball exactly where he needed to.

Could have been an even bigger day.

Agreed physically. Disagree mentally. I think his processing ability and decisiveness are exactly why he's seen so much success. Former pros breaking down his film all gush about his ability to make the right read.

I don’t mean this as a negative. His ultimate upside is capped by his physical abilities, but he is an excellent fit for the system he is in. Both can be true.

I'm kicking myself for not buying him this offseason. He's easy to root for and is executing at a high level.

I don't think his physical limitations matter much. It underscores the reality that Shanahan's offense doesn't need someone with above-average or even elite physical gifts to run like this: Matt Schaub, Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo.

It's not exactly a list of solid, good, or even great athletes.

Someone already said it, but Purdy is an extension of Shanahan and likely sees the field in the way he does. He's also a natural distributor, who makes quick reads, processes well, has good overall timing with his receivers and doesn't divert much. His ball placement has also been very impressive in the intermediate.

Through 8 starts:

107 passer rating
8.1 yards/att.
17 touchdowns
4 interceptions
67% completion

Purdy obviously looks really good. I think we're approaching being past the point of fluke territory, especially considering he's still playing well post-UCL surgery. He didn't even have a real offseason this time around. Sure, we can point to the plethora of weapons he has to work with, but at the end of the day he's still a 7th round pick doing this. That doesn't happen much regardless of who's on the field.
