Successful vet team reaching cliff

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Successful vet team reaching cliff

Postby WhiskeyRacer » Thu May 18, 2023 7:22 am

I took over this team when it was a bottom feeder of the league in 2016. Got lucky with a few trades and picks then was able to make a decent run at the ship for a few years. Never won it all, but was competitive enough to keep the dream alive until unceremoniously getting trashed in the playoffs last year. The league is top heavy with a decent amount of top players concentrated in half the league.

I'm looking for some constructive criticism and advice from others that have been in this type of position with their team and how they have/would handle this year and beyond.

Part of me sees how old my WR and RB are and think it is time for rebuild. The other can't stop chasing the dragon.

Thanks in advance

This is a tricky spot to be in but the good news, you have pieces to build around no matter what you decide to do. With these types of builds, I think it always comes down to return. If you are looking to cash out before most value is gone, I would shop Chubb, Henry, Foreman, Mostert, Hopkins, Evans and Engram. See what your options are on the market and league wide and let that help guide you in which direction you go. If you get low ball offers all offseason, hold and see how your team comes out and shop again in season when hopeful this group is producing if you do not look like a contender. The offseason is the worst time to move vets, but it never hurts to get the offers started.

Building around Jackson, Herbert, Waddle and Andrews is a good place to be. I would be more looking to retool now but returns are key. See what the market looks like. Good luck!

You're competing. Done. Now let's talk strategy :).

You're set at QB and TE now and for the long-term. You have some aging win-now WRs and one young cornerstone WR. RB is older. Let's start with the worst-case scenario: your team is horrible this year. Fine. You'll have a high 2024 draft pick, and you have enough young ascending players that you can hold them for a couple of years or trade them for a huge haul. Let's say your team is middle-of-the-road. You can trade your aging players for picks / younger players and be ready to roll in 2024 or trade your future picks for a 2023 push. And, obviously, if you're having a great season, then woohoo!!

One other possibility: See if there are players one tier below your aging vets whom you like more than most who are younger and/or can bring back a draft pick, too. For instance, say you think that Akers or Dobbins is going to be big. Trade Chubb or Henry for one of them plus a pick. Maybe you could get C. Watson (if you like him) for Hopkins, even though there might be a production drop this year. I'd also explore trading away players who have had a perceived value spike but are risky bets: Engram, Okonkwo (though I personally love him and would want to hold), Hardman... or guys whose bottom could really fall out: Engram, Mooney, Hardman, Evans, Foreman.

Yes, you'll weaken your team in 2023. But none of those players are core to a championship, and you could likely bolster your 2024 quiver quite a bit. That goes back to the opening paragraph: it aligns with all three possibly outcomes.

TL; DR -- enjoy your run in 2023 and see what happens!

Start: 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1FLEX, 1SFLEX

10 team SF has QB values closer to 16 team 1 QB than 12 team SF. If your league over values QB you could be advantaged by not doing the same.

QB - Jackson, Herbert, Tua
Well the good news is you have a good 3 here, if you need to make a move downgrading one of Jackson/tua would be a viable.

RB - Chubb, Henry, Foreman, Mostert, Kyren Williams, Isaiah Spiller
Aged rbs are fine. I feel good about Chubb and Henry this year. And really with aging teams you don't want to invest heavily in young rbs unless you can also get the young wrs.

WR - Hopkins, Evans, Waddle, McLaurin, Mooney, Hardman, Collins
I think this group looks a lot different if you move waddle to the front lol. Honestly it's a good group. I'd be kinda shocked if Evans finishes the season on TB. I think you need a wr2 added here.

TE - Andrews, Engram, Chig Okonkwo
Looks good.

2023 Picks: 1.05, 2.03, 2.05, 2.08, 3.05, 4.05

Your 1.05 should be a valuable pick and the 2.03 and 2.05 should land you a decent RB for one of those picks.

Now in a ten teamer I would normally be drafting bijan, Gibbs, and jsn in the top 3. It's possible that the SF allur will get to your leaguemates and two QBs may go in the first 4 leaving you with either Gibbs or jsn. Both of those players fill a hole for you. If you think your league is sharp and won't go QB, I'd look to move from 1.05 to 1.03 and take jsn or Gibbs.

The 2.03 and 2.05 you're probably looking at the likes of charb, achane, miller, flowers, TEs, and QBs if they fall. I think with those picks two of those players is good.

Overall: you have a team capable of winning this year so I wouldn't blow it up. You have some picks that can infuse some youth. If you end up with JSN, Charb, and another RB/wr I think you set your team up nicely.

Good point. I had been focusing on RB quite a bit

Fixed and it does look better. I think Evans being traded would be the best thing for him moving forward.
