Commissioners: How to handle free agency during offseason?

Postby aggs » Tue Dec 20, 2011 8:45 pm

Our league had two blind bidding periods and Sunday was first come, first serve up until noon.

We have allowed waivers to remain open during the fantasy playoffs. However, I am still undecided of how to handle the offseason. Let's say someone makes a 3-for-1 trade, if the wire is closed, does the owner have two open spots for the entire offseason? Also, if waivers are open, is it blind bidding? This is something I didn't plan out and don't think any of the owners have thought about it anyway.

I'd like to think of something that's generally what most dynasty leagues do during the offseason.

Thanks.

Taken from our DLF Invitational League bylaws:

All unowned players will be locked at the start of week 16. After the last pre-season game an offseason waiver run will take place in which the amount of rounds will be determined by the Commissioners.

They have open spots until the draft. Not that big of a deal, they just have space to make a 1 for 3 trade then or extra spots for the draft picks they make.

All free agents and incoming rookies are locked until the draft as soon as week 13 hits for us. You can't have people blindly picking up people once the season is over, why hold a draft if that's the case.

For any trades, like the person above said. If it's a 3 for 1 or whatever, just make the room on the roster that got the 2 extra to hold those players too.

Word of advice, if you didn't think of this before the rules were set, go through and see what else was missed. You need to try to think of any possible scenario before it happens to have a rule in place.

We lock rosters after week 16 until the rookie/fa draft.

We lock rosters at the conclusion of the full NFL year, which is the end of the Super Bowl, and then hold the rookie/FA draft in early August. It gives everyone a bit of time after the fantasy season is done to get their roster in order and how they want it in preparation for the next year.

If a team did a 3 for 1 trade during the off season, then yes, the team on the receiving end would have to obviously drop 2 players to accommodate the extra guys and the team trading the 3 away would then have 2 open roster slots until the draft (unless they made another trade that gained them extra players again.

We lock rosters at the end of week 16, conduct a rookie draft in May and then a FA auction in August. But this is a contract league, so that's really the only way it can be done.
