Spam Offers - Poll: Am I the a-hole?

Postby Ravenous » Sun May 10, 2020 6:25 pm

How do you feel about spam offers? Does your league discourage, encourage, or not care about them?

In one of the leagues I am in, we are carrying a ton of extra players right now. 20 Team, 2x player copies; 30 man rosters, 5 man taxi squad, and 10 extra spots during off-season for a total of 45 roster spots.

We just finished our 5 round rookie draft. One of the owners sent out 10+ trades to most/all of the owners offering guys like: Dez Bryant, Dontrell Hilliard, Patrick Laird, etc for 2021 4th round picks.

The simple answer is hit-decline and move on. But, if all 20 owners sent out these mass offers, it would be obnoxious. Am I the asshole for discussing how stupid/offensive this trade tactic is in the league chat? Other than asking the person to stop, are there ways to limit/discourage this trade tactic? What do you think?

Thanks for your opinions.

Spam offers aren't that annoying if they're somewhat reasonable.

What pisses me off are the 3rd round picks for Chris Godwin level spam offers; because I know there will be one idiot that clicks accept and it just makes me want to instantly leave the league when that happens.

I would categorize Godwin for a 3rd as more of a troll offer than spam. You could only send this offer to one owner (or maybe more if it is a multiple copy league). Maybe he could send his 3rd round pick for every player in the top 20, that would definitely be spam. Just to clarify....what i am discussing is 200ish trade offers, 10-13 trades per owner, selling a bunch of end-of-bench or waiver wire type players for future picks.

Sometimes I wish I got reasonable spam offers at least. When I get no offers and the league goes into a lull, it's quite boring.

This other guy is just trying to extract value. He probably won't get anywhere, but who knows? Maybe another owner inquires about a different player and he counters with a 2nd. Done deal. I've sent out a bunch of offers to get the ball rolling and some owners respond and we can talk through a deal, some decline and that's fine with me.

As long as the deals aren't Godwin for a 3rd like Zig said, there should be no issue

If the number really is 200 and you aren't using hyperbole, I think that could get a bit annoying. He'd be better off sending a message to the other owners as to not piss them off. Maybe tell the owner that?

I personally received 13 offers. Other owners have said something in the group chat. I am making the assumption that every other owner (18 more excluding myself, and the sender) with a 2021 4th round pick received between 10 and 13 offers.

Well the 200 would be at the sending owner's level. No one individual (other than the sender) would see 200 offers.
Not justifying it by any means, as 10 offers/person is a bit excessive.
I'd just ignore them and let them expire. If he bitches, then tell him there were so many offers you didn't have the time to look at them all.

Seeing those names reminds me of one owner in one of my leagues many years ago who had Adrian Peterson (Chicago) on his roster and sent offers out to everyone in the league offering him for a subsequent year first, hoping someone would think it was Adrian Peterson (Minnesota). Even had a spiel how it was cheap for the top RB in the NFC North. I saw it first and emailed the entire league warning them about it, then the guy wanted to fight me. Actually gave me his address and told me to meet him in the parking lot of his apartment complex. I actually thought about sending one of my clients who is a professional wrestler to his house.
Was not the first time he pulled a stunt like that and needless to say the commish booted him the next year.

Know who you're dealing with. Every league and GM is different. There are some GMs I talk to all the time and some I almost never do.

If a behavior - trade or otherwise - is consistently obnoxious or damaging to the league, I typically first try to handle it myself. Talk to the GM, ask about or explain some things, tell them I'm not trading X player, etc.

And yes, in rare cases, some people turn out to be aholes in your view. Escalate to the whole league and/or move on. That's (fantasy) life!

This scenario is the main reason i keep the roster max the same at all times. You may still get an owner trying to do this with his "end of roster" guys....but typically the players have some value and maybe someone would be willing to stash them. In your scenario, decline or let them sit and move on. Im not a fan of the tactic and find it disrespectful to leaguemates.

if someone still owns guys like dez, sounds like your league needs to rework roster sizes. idk what copy leagues look like, but essentially your in a 10 man league. 45 is alot of spots and pretty unnecessary.

in the 12 man i run its 36+10 taxi (20 taxi after rookie draft) but we use IDP so even though waivers are pretty scarce throughout the season, we still dont have people rostering guys like dez. i think you guys need to rework your roster sizes.

I voted both: the spammer and you are a-holes. But there are times that someone needs to be an a-hole and speak up.

Hopefully the commissioner would pipe up for the good of the league, but if that person doesn't, you go ahead. Take the flak. Address the issue. Move on. At least everyone will know that the buck stops SOMEwhere and this is a group of people who deserve some respect, not the wild west of used car salesmen and Cialis offers.

We have a guy like this in one of my leagues, who sends out daily offers of junk. Not nearly as bad as what you describe but it is st least a couple or day. So a couple things I've noticed.

One, it only takes a few seconds to hit reject. If this kind of thing ruins your day, what are real problems like?

Two, I've made more trades with this guy. He is likely my best trade partner because it gets conversation started and I learn his valuation quicker.

Three, if you don't send trade offers, trade offers won't get accepted. I've seen some absolute crap trades go down in my leagues. Last year towards the middle end of the season Curtis Samuel went for a 2020 1st. At this point, it was easy to see the 1st was an early first in SF. It happens all the time.

Lastly, if it bothers you then tell him. Just send a message and tell him you feel he's sending you a bunch of poor trades. At that point if he's unreasonable, move on to the be an ahole stage.

My league is usually relatively inactive regarding trading, so I'm happy to see any offer, even if junk. Usually try to come up with a counter, but usually just reject- and double check to make sure I didn't accidentally accept!

I have about 200 trade partners combined in all my leagues. I can count on 1 hand the number of owners that send me constant lowball offers, or offers you describe where they are trying to unload a Dez Bryant for a 3rd or whatever. I don't get mad, I just don't take the offers seriously when they enter my phone alerts. If it's one of the guys I know to send junk, I'll take my time getting back to them because I know it'll probably not be worth my time.

I also don't bother sending these guys any deals. If they think Dez is worth a 3rd, they also think Kirk is worth three 1sts. I just ignore and avoid these people. I don't get worked up over it.

Those aren’t bad offers necessarily so I think you should chill. He’s just trying to get some late picks for his garbage and was seeing if any of the league liked his deep sleepers.
