This was my first thought also, after seeing this wasn't in fact a bumped old thread. I guess we could force them to trade him or whatever, but I'm pretty sure his contract wasn't up yet when he retired.

Yes, but they also retain his contract and cap hold. Basically the Lions would be on the hook for his cap number and would have to accept it or release it, and they are likely not in a financial position to take on an unexpected hit of that size so they would almost certainly just release him at this point.
