When has "_____ is this years _____!" actually worked out?

Postby Dynasty DeLorean » Mon Jun 04, 2018 5:54 am

We see these every year but how often do these types of proclamations actually work out? It seems logical that similar players (or players in similar situations) should have a similar outcome but rarely does that seem to be the case. Can anyone name some that have come to fruition in the past?

Some for this year that I've seen;
  • Trubisky is this years Goff
Sony Michel is the next Kamara
_____ (I feel like I've seen several names) is this years Kareem Hunt

Some people might argue that

Mike Evans could be this years next Nuk

Evans had a pretty down year like Nuk the previous year.

Not trying for a brag post, but I was pretty high on Tyreek Hill last offseason following KC's release of Jeremy Maclin, and I believe I called him the next TY Hilton in a few posts/tweets. Can't think of any others off the top of my head right now.

I'd compare Trubisky more to Wentz than to Goff..

I do get a good chuckle when I see Stefon Diggs compared to AB. Or someone called "baby Gronk". And I lost track of how many "next Wes Welkers" there were.

I don't buy hype anymore. I learned my lesson by shelling out 1sts & 2nds for guys like:

Michael Floyd (Cardinals WR)
David Wilson (Giants RB)
Montee Ball (Broncos RB)
Kenny Britt (Titans WR)
Vick Ballard (Colts RB)

Year after year, they don't pan out. Lotta hype in the off-season, more in the pre-season, 0 production in the regular season. Bit me in the bleep more than once. I listed to all the hype, and all the coach speak and players talking themselves and others up. I buy them before they perform, thinking that I'm buying low, but instead I'm buying hot garbage. Hard lesson to learn in dynasty.

I then researched the hell out of successful RBs & WRs because I was sick of getting burned, and the usual formula for sucess is pretty simple:

(1) Drafted high
(2) Produces at least 50% almost immediately (more for a RB)
(3) Plays for 1 team their almost their entire career

A guy like Treadwell scares me. Ajayi says he wants to dominate the Eagles backfield and be the workhorse (2 teams, whole lotta talk).

.................................................. Sammy Watkins..........

Nope. Done with all the hype. Can't even think of one time that it has worked out. Probably has somewhere, but I can't think of it.

Wow, this thread has a decidedly negative feel to it.....

In 2014 I drafted Jarvis Landry mostly because I saw that he was "this year's Anquan Boldin and/or Hines Ward". I got him at the start of the 3rd round (IDP league). He didn't start much for me as a rookie because my WRs were stacked, but it has payed off huge over the last four years.

No one is really even attempting to answer DD's question...

I'd say for top-end RBs, quite a few pan out. People saying Fournette was last year's Zeke, or that Zeke was that year's Gurley, etc. But obviously RB is the one position where the stud prospects are REASONABLY projectable going from college to the pros.

Lots of people said Evan Engram would be the next great mismatch TE, and he's off to a roaring start.

Ballage as this year's David Johnson seems like a pretty safe bet...

I feel like generally proven players shouldn't apply. Evans had a WR1 season before, so it wouldn't be surprising if he has another one.

Otherwise, I agree with the OP.

nah man... as in both Goff and Trubisky had bad rookie years, then coaching changes, then because Goff had a good 2nd year ppl are predicting the same for Trubisky. Not a player to player comp.
