How long has your league been around?

Postby hockeyBjj » Thu Nov 16, 2017 8:23 am

A point I just thought of, when people are saying they prefer Wide Receivers over Runningbacks due to career longevity. How often do you actually own that WR long enough to gain from that longevity? How long do leagues typically exist for? I now own Mike Evans and OBJ and hoping I'm set for years and years at WR.

League is in its 5th year, I'm in my second year in it, but seems to have a 30% turnover of new owners each year so not sure if it'll exist long enough for me to actually win a championship if I don't get the job done in 2018.

How about you guys? Anyone been in a dynasty league 10+ years?

My oldest full dynasty started in 2007, so this is the 11th season.

In that league, I traded for Calvin Johnson in his 2nd season, so I held him for all eight seasons he played. I also drafted Jimmy Graham his rookie year, so I've held him for eight seasons.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Thanks for the share. Things like this are what I'm hoping to do. I have my team set up how I like for the most part and want to coast with the big trades now and ride it as it is for the most part.

League in sig is my only dynasty franchise, and we've been running for 23 years.

A few owners have come and gone, but 10 of the 14 teams are held by the original owners and everyone gets along pretty well. As you can see we play non-ppr, so WR's aren't as sought after (aside from the studs). RB's are generally more coveted, and they're tough to trade for if they "hit".

But as to your original question, I absolutely try to land stud WR's and develop a core of 4-5 of them so I can forget the position for several years and swing for the fences at my other roster positions. Because of the longevity of a quality WR, once you've landed enough to set-and-forget the position it frees you up to improve other areas of your squad. Evans and OBJ are fantastic anchors for your long-term plans.

In a different league from the one in my signature, everyone in that league knows each other, we've been going 4 years now. I could see with heavy owner turnover why it would be risky/annoying.

Im in my 15th season with one league. Been in it since the start. It was a 2 team keeper league and I had Washington/Denver. We were only allowed players that were on the two teams we had. I had Clinton Portis and Terrell Davis for the whole time Since he ended up in Was but over the years it turned into dynasty league. I think the longest i have held on to a player is about 4 or 5 years. I drafted leveon bell and amari cooper and dont think I will ever trade them.

That is eerily similar.
My main league is also in it's 11th. I also traded for Calvin in his 2nd season and held him into retirement.
Others for me:
Originally drafted Peyton Manning and held him until Neck Injury and then traded for the pick that became Andrew Luck.
I held Joseph Addai his entire career
I picked up Arian Foster the day he got called off of practice squad and held him until he was a dolphin and I had a small window to trade him, but didn't get much.

Nowadays I just look more at a 3yr winning window... You can't get too caught up on winning 5+ years from now or you may struggle to win today.

My longest league collapsed this year before the fourth season started. Commish went off grid, no idea what happened to him but like 6 owners left after the Commish went awol so that finished that league off.

My other leagues are one, two or three years old. 2-4 owners seem to leave every year in all of my leagues but they do get replaced. Most owners who leave tend to either say they are too busy in life and/or in too many leagues. One guy left cos he hated the kneeling for the anthem controversy and said he now hates the NFL! Nobody trashes their teams or anything before they leave. I play with strangers for what it's worth.

My experience therefore is not to undertake lengthy rebuilds as who knows when leagues will go under. Just retool incrementally rather than blow it all up.

For leagues still around:
My newest dynasty league is in year 13. Plenty of newb turnover in this league.
My eldest dynasty league is in year 19. Only 7 total owners have moved on.

As to the WR question - you are looking at two different issues:
Keeping a player for several years
vs
The perceived/relative value of the young WR.

In other words - the idea that you can keep a player for longer vs actually keeping the player - it just comes down to trade value and sometimes you can get a lot more in trade because of those values.

As to the other question - started playing dynasty in 1996 - that league lasted until the original commissioner/founder passed away in 2012
:-(
We went for one more tribute season after that.

My current longest lasting leagues are the DLF Charter league (2006), and my local dynasty leagues that started in 2007 and 2008.
