Jaelen Strong - You still holding on like me?

Postby RenMasters » Sun May 28, 2017 3:48 pm

Two years ago I drafted Jaelen Strong with the 2.1 pick. I thought he profiled very well for a big, tall, WR that could win contested catches. Then the last two years happened and I'm left wondering, do I really consider dropping him?? I don't think so. When he gets a decent volume of targets he produces. His struggles have been staying healthy and competing with Hopkins, Fuller, and Braxton Miller for targets.

Who else is still holding on strong and who gave up?

I dropped my shares of him. I never drafted him though, so all my shares came from picking him after his original owner cut bait on him. I picked him back up in a few leagues before the draft because I'd heard rumors that he could be traded (back before Romo reitired). Once the draft came and went and he wasn't moved, I dumped him again. I just don't see much of a path to fantasy relevance.

You have to be able to do more than make highlight-reel contested catches to be a good NFL WR. Otherwise, someone like Tre McBride would be a star already. Unfortunately, Strong just may not be that type of player.

I don't see the path to relevance here.

We all can look at other teams in our leagues and wonder why they are rostering 2 or 3 players that we wouldn't dream of adding from waivers. Chances are we each carry them as well. Strong is one such player. I don't own him anywhere. Never have, never will.

I'm rostering him in one league because the roster size is large and my WRs are weak. Might as well hold in case he can do something, but once I find more talent at that position he's a goner TBH.

I still own 10 shares - but in leagues where I dont own him he is usually in the waiver wire. Depends on your league settings / roster size. Most people wont hold onto him in leagues with 24 or less roster spots, especially if you have Team D or Kickers involved as well. But in a league with 30 man rosters with the ability to flex 5-6 WRs starting why not?

I mean he is still younger than some of the rookies in this years class such as Dede Westbook, ArDarius Stewart & Joe Williams to name a few. Some players take a few years to acclimatize to the NFL. Maybe he'll never be a WR1-2 but WR3 from time to time is still within the realm of possibility imo.

Personally I am not a big believer in Braxton Miller, they dont have a strong TE presence, and Watson if he develops right could possibly feed 3 WR so he could easily be a guy you want to use on bye weeks or as best ball depth - especially if Fuller doesnt pan out or Miller takes too long to transition (not everyone can be Edelman).

If I am going to cut him it is either going to be for a 1st or 2nd round talent with better situation, or if I am contending and need a player on waivers.
Please speak to clarion contrarion before considering the use of vetos..

Wow it looks like everyone has given up. I guess the expectation that it takes 3 years to get a return on rookie WRs is out the window at this point. He's only played two years and his second year was cut short by injury.

It's not just that though...Hopkins and Fuller are the clear top 2 WRs in that offense. HOU also has Braxton Miller, who is a much better athlete if he can develop his route-running better. Watson may elevate the passing offense, but not necessarily enough to support a ton of fantasy options. There's just very little upside for Strong. He's just a lotto ticket guy in deep leagues.

He's worth a back end roster spot. He's been in the system for s few years now, light could come on. He and miller interest me, fuller not so much.

Not at all but let's be realistic. Fuller and Nuk are going to be the top 2 for the foreseeable future. Then you got CJ at TE, plus it's a top 5 team in rushing volume. So he's at best the 4th/5th option. Factor in his already less than stellar two seasons, off field DUI, and competing with Braxton Miller, unless you have super deep rosters there are many better options.
