TJ Jones, anything to see here?

Postby lukkynumber13 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 9:33 pm

Not for team sig, but a different one in which I just finished a startup. It's 12-teams, 65-man rosters, so lots of flyer possibilities. I took a late round flyer on TJ Jones from Detroit, he seemed to have a little flash in the late season game against Green Bay.

Anyone think he has any shot at getting the WR3 job in Detroit?

If Anquan Boldin comes back, probably not. They may choose to draft someone in the middle rounds if Boldin does not play again. Better chance of beating out a rookie than Boldin IMO.

definitely worth a stash that deep. I liked him out of ND, just needs to stay healthy to get a shot.

Worth a stash with those roster numbers. I'd put his shot at winning the WR3 as less than 20% or so, though.

Just from watching the Lions this year (Lions fan), he doesn't actually fit the mold of what they had in Boldin, which is what I think the offense wants/needs. For my money he's more of a mini-replica of Marvin Jones. He's got similar measureables except his height and weight.

If Boldin is not resigned, the Lions will likely look for a replacement or have Jared Abbrederis step in to a somewhat similar role as Boldin rather than give it to Jones. I would also think Andre Roberts is ahead of Jones on the depth chart for that slot receiver position. If I'm recalling correctly, Jones played on the outside when he'd come in for the Lions sort of strange 3rd and long sets (vs GB), and Roberts would play in the slot.

My word of caution is to make sure you have reasonable expectations. I find that I (and we all) get into the habit of becoming a little too emotionally attached to those very late round stash players. Once we grab them in a draft like this we start looking across our leagues and realize he's on the wire in most of them and start making moves for them. We all do it. I liked Jhurell Pressley, Kapri Bibbs as those late adds the last couple of years. And for some reason we carry these guys all (or almost) year long dropping other players when we are making roster moves. Occassionally they pan out but for the most part they always remain on the back end of our bench as a stash until we ultimately give up like everyone else already did.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Seems to get bumped off his routes quite a bit. Deep threat and not much else but given the league size he's fine as a hold.

Would you rather stash Janis or TJ?

TJ. Janis was just that playoff flash in the pan and he's buried on that depth chart behind Nelson, Adams, Allison, Cobb and my sister just to name a few.

I've liked Jones ever since he came out of ND, but he needs to climb the depth-chart somehow before he can ever matter to us in this format. I love him in theory as a classic no. 2 type possession-receiver, but the problem is that Detroit already has three other just-as-good-or-better guys on the chart with exactly the same profile.

What Detroit needs is a true #1 type receiver, and although I like TJ, he's not a #1 type guy. He's, at the very best, their second-best option for a #2 type guy, firmly behind Tate, and that's already throwing undeserved shade at Marvin and Andre Roberts (another underrated pro I've quietly admired for years), because I like them, too!

I'd sooner stash a practice squad rb than him. Chances are higher for rb injuries clearing a way than for a wr that far down the depth chart to get a shot. Practice squad rbs get NFL opportunities quite often, actually
