Christian McCaffrey: Why not?

Postby People Mover » Thu Dec 22, 2016 6:43 pm

He has declared. He is on his way to the NFL. With his daddy's connections, I am sure he knows he doesn't NEED to play in any bowl game. SOMEONE has had to advise him that he is a quality prospect. But why is the fantasy community so quick to label him a third down specialist? He looks fast, catches well, has nice vision, has NFL pedigree, and if he is anything like his pops, he is going to be tough as nails. Yet, he rarely gets any props. The 2017 class took a "hit" because Freeman and Chubb decided to return back to school. Yet Christian, who many thought would return to school, declares for the draft and the needle didn't move. Why is this kid being slept on and ignored?

The elephant in the room is that he's a white running back. However, I don't think that's the reason he doesn't look like a lead back. I think he's more of a weapon than a workhorse. He reminds me a lot of Reggie Bush. I don't think that's a bad thing.

the White factor is an issue, its reverse racism, anytime you have a white Wr or RB its always the same thing, quicker than fast, coaches son, cerebral, not gonna jump out of the gym etc etc. Guys like Woodhead have been getting tagged with comments like that for years and he ran a 4.3 forty and had a 42 inch vertical. As far as his NFL prospects ill be glad to snag him if people are letting him slip, i compare him to a Gio Bernard in my eyes.

I agree with everything here. I do believe he possesses a ceiling of being Shady McCoy, and a floor of Gio, but the Bush comp is a very realistic expectation and would make for a very nice career, by all means.

Don't worry, he'll be there at 1.05 if that's who you want. Why would you draft him sooner? He isn't better than Fournette/Cook/Williams/Davis. Doesn't matter if he was white, black, grey, or green.

Simple answer?

Not a lot of successful white RBs...there I said it! I probably won't own him anywhere. As others have said...he isn't better than any of the top 4 guys.

personally, I dont think he runs very fluid. will wait until combine and some more scouting to say what i think definitively.

I don't believe he will project I think taking him at 1.05 is ok maybe a reach but I can't think of many players you'd take over him there Ross Westbrook etc... I think he's going to be the next Danny Woodhead I don't see him doing much more he is not a three down back he is not an NFL between the tackles back he will be a pass catching back and punt/kick returner.

I think McCaffrey's great, but long-term he can't be more than a satellite-back at the pro level at his current BMI. He needs at least 15 more pounds for his height. Even CJ Spiller has better BMI than McCaffrey.

Thank you for simplifying this. As to McCaffrey: he will take time to develop. Much like Derek Henry, he shouldn't be seeing the field much as a rook. See Woodhead, Welker, etc.

He's intriguing, though I do wonder how NFL coaches and FO types will see him and use him.

Landing spot will be really important for setting his value. 3 down back duties vs being the change of pace type.

Bow you are just lumping him in with white guys and guys with white-sounding names.

I probably should have done something more productive with that time...

woodhead ? that dude is a midget I see mccaffrey listed at 6 foot 201 lbs what was woodhead out of chadron state 5'9" 175 lbs or something like that perhaps. I do think he needs to add some muscle mass but I have been quite impressed with the tape I have watched . I was prepared to spend 5 minutes and lump him in the double whammy category of white rb / standford rb pile but he is much more than either label would suggest . Probably not a 3 down back but those are few and far between these days so that is of little concern. I see a better version of shane vereen who could be a dangerous weapon in the correct system. I also think that he will be pro ready from the get go based on the stanford system and his dad sharing what will be expected .

Sorry, didn't clarify that his specialty is in the return game. See Woodhead, Welker coming into the league
