I am, then, the voice for the other side. Penny was a first round pick this year, Carson was a 7th round pick in 2017 (3 rounds after Williams). Penny should/will win the starting gig before the season is over. Even if Carson is solid, Penny is the future and, if it's close, Penny wins because of investment.

Williams was drafted ahead of Jones. Which says the Packers preferred Williams and were ok with the idea of Jones not being there later. In fact, the packers waited till their second 5th round pick.. two Packers picks after Williams. Williams continued to be the starter when Jones returned from injury last year, and he continues to be the starter this off season. Jones needs to improve on a few important aspects of his game before he takes over, which won't happen if he can't play.

So, give me the guy who is, currently, in a better spot for the future. Anything can happen, but you can only base your opinions on what you know today, not what you hope happens tomorrow.

I think you could get a little more tossed in with that exchange - it feels like the perception out there favors Carson, raising his relative value. But if you can't get them to toss in another player or future pick, then a straight up deal works for me too.

Both have pretty decent chances of being irrelevant by mid season but Williams has higher upside in the Packers offense than Carson does with the sea hawks who appear to be making all sorts of dumb decisions lately. Since you have Jones I'd rather have the security of a 1st and 2nd down workhorse with goal line work vs the upside/high risk of having Carson AND Jones pay off.
