Cousins to Vikes: receiver fantasy impact

Postby Dr. Trades » Tue Mar 13, 2018 9:21 am

What's the impact on Diggs/Thielen/Rudolph with Cousins in Minnesota? Would obviously seem like an upgrade, but is it really? Who benefits most? Thoughts?

Big winners are Cook, Rudolph and the Vikings as a whole. It was not clear what they were going to have at QB after letting everyone loose to FA. The hope here is that Cousins will be a significant upgrade to what Keenum was able to do last year. (I believe he will be)

If you think Cousins' nack for finding his TE won't translate to MN, could be a good time to sell. However, I think Rudolph is going to have another top 10 year and likely be in position for more redzone work.
Same goes for Cook (more TD opportunity and schemed passing plays)

As long as Cousins shows he is an upgrade over Keenum, Diggs and Thielen should continue to produce as WR2 with WR1 upside.
10-team .5PPR SF 4 point passing TD
Start: 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1FLEX, 1SFLEX

Uptick across the board. I believe the QB play will be much better (capt. Obvious) which will open the run game more, which will in turn make the entire offense less predictable.

i actually think it hurts most of their WR. Cousins has never heavily targeted a wr and washington has been a fantasy wasteland despite cousins posting solid numbers year after year.

to put in perspective Adam Thielen had 143 targets in 2017 and cousins top targeted player was Crowder with 103 targets.

maybe washington didnt have anyone worthy of heavy targets or maybe he spreads the ball around more than some other qbs might. looking back even when garcon or djax were relevant they didnt command top targets either.

Viking fan, my opinion is that Diggs gets the biggest boost

Thielen out targeted Diggs last year, but Thielen's greatest skill seems to be that he is a "If I can touch it I can catch it" receiver. So Keenum kept going his way even if the throw wasn't perfect or Thielen had a defender literally crawling over him. His hands were crazy impressive. He'd flash a yellow glove at the last second and come down with it

Diggs is a "more skilled" WR in that he's faster, quicker, and has better routes. I think Cousins looks to him more for his ability to get open further down the field. Keenum was many times in game manager mode for 3 out of 4 quarters due to their defense getting them ahead and then Case's job becoming to not simply mess up which he was fantastic at. Cousins I feel loves his numbers, and I think he takes significantly more shots towards Diggs giving him a chance to be a 1200 yard receiver if he stays healthy

Rudolph stays in his role as the big body on a 3rd down to the sticks or endzone reindeer

I'm not following your logic. Are you saying that Cousins to Minnesota hurts the potential fantasy production of Minnesota's wrs? Basing it, (your thought) on how Cousins had crappy wr, rb, oline play and a sieve def which put him and the entire Washington offense more predictably in passing / play from behind situations. ?

Amen. This is what I came here to say.

From a fantasy aspect, I think it's either a downgrade or a parallel move for the Vikings' WRs.

 trying wrap my head around this thought. Someone will benefit I would think. The offense should be taking a step up with more points scored, more big plays, etc. Seems you guys are of the thought that with the stronger armed Cousins, the Mn wr take a hit in production or at best, stay parallel? So, is it going to be the TE and RB positions that benefit and score more?

To be clear, I'm of the thought that Cook, Rudolph, Diggs, and Thielen all get a bump up in production by way of yds and TDs. Tough to predict target dispersement at this time between Diggs n Thielen.

I honestly don't think that it's going to make a huge spike in production for the WR's. Keenum was actually really good last year. I think it guarantees the same type of numbers again this year, as I don't think Keenum would have dupicated his productiion, however, Cousins will not be trailing in games nearly as often in Minny. The have a top notch D, so I think that the passing game could start off strong in games, and then shift to a more rush based attack in the 2nd half of games. I think it is a good thing for this offense, but I would not expect astronomical increases in production. I would expect a mild increase, but nothing major for the WR corps.

Keenum really locked on to his top 2 guys. He trusted them and fed them.

Cousins has never played that way. I'm sure he will improve the Vikings as a team, but I don't personally think Thielen & Diggs will have better stats.

D Jack 56 of 100 for 1005 4TDs
Garcon 79 of 116 for 1041 3TDs
Reed 66 of 87 for 686 6TDs in 12 Games
Last year in Wash with Cousins.

IMO Diggs and Rudolph get slight bumps while Thielen comes down a bit, Bradford and Keenum locked onto him. I think Rudolph will get his personal best TDs this season too. Probably a Top 5 option at TE. If they don't trade him I can see Treadwell getting some decent numbers in periodic games too.

Do you not think that the pass attempts drop, though? It's a team with a great D and a much better running back. To me I think that this logically points to an efficient and balanced offense that does not throw the ball as often as Washington did.

Yep 380 attempts by Washington that year and 480 by Minn last year, I think Minn will pass more and try to dominate teams in a more balanced attack then they were last year. Sam Bradford in 2016 had 100 more throwing attempts then then Keenum did last year, mind you they didn't have Cook or Murray. NFL isn't about just controlling the clock anymore its get the lead quick and keep it rolling, control the clock when you need to.
