Cook or Fournette (debate thread)

Postby DYNASTY BALLA$ » Sun Jan 29, 2017 12:11 pm

I have noticed that most of the DLF Forum members talk about the 1.01 as Fournette

Yet, the DLF Experts (all except one) have Cook ranked #1 and Fournette ranked #2 and it's by quite a margin (1.25 to 3.25 on average)

DLF 2017 Rookie Rankings: https://dynastyleaguefootball.com/2017-rookie-rankings/

I just find it interesting how there is such a consensus for Fournette at 1.01 by the members and Cook seems the clear 1.01 by the experts

So, let the debate begin

Personally I prefer Fournettes style of play, he's a monster at trucking, he's got the height, good weight, great speed and acceleration. However, I will be the first to say that I have little knowledge in terms of the offensive lines that both Fournette and Cook worked behind. From video it seems that Cook had larger lanes and openings (but obviously comes with the receiving ability, nice feather to have in his cap). This is one thing I would like to know prior to the draft, who can make the most out of nothing?

In the context of making plays
Fournette:
+ He seems to have a good jump cut ability, similar to what we've seen DJ do this year.
+ Great change of direction and patients to find gaps.
+ He eats up the secondary with his size, however, looking for contact is not always a good thing.
- He lacks in the receiving game, but its a skill that can be learned.

Where I'd want him: Carolina

Cook:
+ Great receiving ability, more likely to have touches in any situation.
+ Good pace and seems to have good vision.
- Fumbling issues at some bad times.

Where I'd want him: Colts

Personally, to make the decision for my draft I'd still like to know how well they have done in relation to their o-lines, how they perform at the combine and I need to know where their going.

I have the 1.01 in one league and I am most likely going to look to trade down a spot to the 1.02. Unless one is in a great spot I'd rather let someone decide for me and give me something for it!

It's pretty easy to talk yourself into either of these guys, to be honest. My league is .5 ppr, and I have them just about equal, with maybe a slight edge to Fournette just because he seems to have a slightly better chance to be an Adrian Peterson / Le'Veon Bell-type player. As the owner of a 1.02 pick this year, I'm happy I don't have to make the decision.

My main debate when it comes to the top prospects right now is how much of a drop-off, if any, is it to Williams/Davis. As I said, I have the 1.02 and could REALLY use a RB, but I already have an offer of 1.03 + 2.03 for 1.02, and I am a huge Williams fan.

Just curious, what do you mean by that? I am assuming you aren't comparing him to AP or Bell based on style of play, but rather in the sense that he could be a generationally great, game-changing back?

Sorry not trying to nit pick, I just don't think I've ever seen Bell's name next to AP's, in a player comp

Yeah, I guess that was a bit misleading. I really haven't considered style of play for either of them too much at this point, and the AP/Bell comparison was just referencing the "generational talent" factor. In fact, Cook seems to be a much closer match to Bell than Fournette. I think both are fairly safe bets to be effective NFL RBs, but Fournette's ceiling seems to be slightly higher than Cooks. At the same time, Cook may in fact be a "safer" bet due to his already established receiving ability.

I'm essentially just trying to justify the fact that I've been influenced by the Fournette hype over the last three years and would slightly prefer him to Cook just because I would rather kick myself for passing on Cook than Fournette, if given the choice. Probably a terrible way to think, to be honest.

I should probably preface my posts with "My only team went 1-12 in the first year of my startup league." :D

Fournette reminds me of a slightly bigger and stronger Melvin Gordon (I mean that as a compliment)

Cook reminds me of Marshawn Lynch.

If I'm in a PPR, I probably want Cook. His pass catching ability is a big plus over Fournette. Otherwise, I'd like Fournette. I do think it's hard to go wrong here, but a lot of their value may depend on where they land as well. I see most mocks with Fournette going to the Panthers. If he lands there, I like that more than most places Cook would go. That being said, I've seen a lot of mocks with Cook heading to the Colts, which would be pretty ideal and hard to pass up number one overall.

Agree. Coin flip to some degree. Combine won't change anything. Landing spot will be huge and likely deciding factor as far as my overall top 4 for this class or top 2 RBs for that matter.

I'm consistently seeing mocks and posters here have Cook going to the colts. I know people here are more hopeful about it than thinking it's going to happen but I can't see a first time GM taking over a flawed team with a horrible defense and Oline taking a luxury pick in the first when this is a deep RB class. I'd pretty much bet my house that's not happening. :nono:

As a Colts fan, who LOVES Cook, I agree it wouldn't be the best move. It wouldn't piss me off, like the needless Dorsett pick, but yeah we need to grab an OT, CB, DL, or OLB early

I'm a Dallas fan, and I'll be the first to admit that I was pretty damn upset we drafted Zeke instead of Ramsey.
Of course my opinion was swiftly altered.

The Zeke situation is of course different because we had our Oline built, but we still had what seemed to be glaring needs in the secondary and pass rush; yet we still drafted Zeke with the fourth overall pick and it took us pretty far. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Colts grab Cook if he was there - and if Ballard takes into consideration what Dallas did last season with Zeke. I do understand the situation is quite a bit different considering the Colts oline and defensive struggles are severe, but I just feel a Cook and Luck pairing could be quite scary. They could potentially attempt what Dallas does, and try to just keep their defense off the field as much as possible. Again, that's easier with an elite oline. I also see the Colts taking an offensive lineman or linebacker, but I suppose it could come down to what the Colts do in FA.
