How to budget for age in salary cap auction?

Postby cd6696 » Mon Jun 22, 2015 6:38 pm

New to Salary Cap Auctions in a dynasty setting. I've done redraft auctions and dynasty snake drafts but not an auction. I'm having difficulty finding the difference in a guy like Lacy vs Forte as far as auction price goes?? In a snake draft Forte falls much farther than Lacy does. What about guys like Andre Johnson compared to John Brown?

I guess my basic question summed up is: Is the bid based on production or are you also paying extra for age? Or do you let the contract years factor for age/longevity?

If I want a top RB, should I be willing to spend a similar amount for Lacy as I would Forte?

Hope this makes sense

It's going to depend on how your league rules are set up. Generally speaking, the 20-25% of cap holds true for stud RB1 and WR1s. You need to do a decent amount of planning ahead of time to make sure you get a team you like. Do you want to win now, build for future, or go for a mix? Generally speaking, younger players do come at a premium. To give you an idea on the players you mentioned: In my startup($1k 4 year max contract ppr done right immediately after NFL draft, QB RB RB WR WR WR TE FLEX. 8 bench slots with rookie taxi squad in separate draft). Obviously there are some steals and also overbids in there. It's sort of just how it rolls. Make a spreadsheet beforehand and put a max bid on every player and a must bid price on guys that are relevant.

Matt Forte RB $175
LeVeon Bell RB $206
Jamaal Charles RB $161
Arian Foster RB $164
Eddie Lacy RB $199
Marshawn Lynch RB $167
Adrian Peterson RB $160
C.J. Anderson RB $150
DeMarco Murray RB $168
Justin Forsett RB $95
LeSean McCoy RB $175
Jeremy Hill RB $156
Mark Ingram RB $78
Lamar Miller RB 100
C.J. Spiller RB $47
Andre Ellington RB $85
Joique Bell RB $42
Alfred Morris RB $95
Frank Gore RB $70
Giovani Bernard RB $86
Carlos Hyde RB $140
Shane Vereen RB $15
Jonathan Stewart RB $37
Latavius Murray RB $98

Antonio Brown WR $213
Demaryius Thomas WR $215
Odell Beckham Jr. WR $202
Dez Bryant WR $214
Jordy Nelson WR $200
Julio Jones WR $225
Randall Cobb WR $199
Emmanuel Sanders WR $111
T.Y. Hilton WR $180
Calvin Johnson WR $195
A.J. Green WR $220
Alshon Jeffery WR $191
DeAndre Hopkins WR $149
Mike Evans WR $192
Brandin Cooks WR $125
Kelvin Benjamin WR $146
Jordan Matthews WR $116
Golden Tate WR $85
Keenan Allen WR $101
Julian Edelman WR $103
Roddy White WR $32
Sammy Watkins WR $102
Brandon Marshall WR $102
DeSean Jackson WR $71
Andre Johnson WR $48
Anquan Boldin WR $9
Brandon LaFell WR $40
Vincent Jackson WR $49
Steve Smith WR $20

Luck and Rodgers each went for about $220 as well. Rest of the QBs were under $100.

So to come back to your Lacy versus Forte point: Lacy is obviously a 4 year, max contract here whereas Forte @ age 29 is probably getting signed for a 1-2 year contract and may get franchised tagged if the owner thinks he has is worth extending beyond that. So that's where the risk is mitigated between the two and why Lacy went for so much more.

A lot of it is just going to boil down to how you and how every one in your league wants to build their teams. Do they want to build to win now, in the future, or have a nice mix? The trends are going to become apparent as the draft progresses.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a response. Been putting together spreadsheets but didn't know what kind of difference to have when breaking for age.

Personally in my league I bid based on redraft rankings and assign contract years based more on age and what I got them for vs. what I paid.

So if my number on Forte was $175 going in, and I got him for $160, then I look at what kind of ranking a $160 RB is. How likely do I think it will be in 1 year to be happy to have him at $160? What about in 2 years? In this example I'd be torn between 1 or 2 years and have to make a judgement call. Or if I ended up paying $200 because I really wanted him and that was the going rate for top RBs, then it's an easy 1 year.

Also a factor is what your drop penalties are. Harsh penalties = lean shorter contracts when in doubt, soft penalties = lean longer contracts.
12 teams, 20 roster spots, hard salary cap $225, 40% drop penalty, max contract 3 yrs (4 yrs for rookies), unlimited total yrs
Start: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, DEF, K; PPR, 6 pts/TD pass
QB: Cam ($29/2015); Wilson ($5/2016)
RB: Gurley ($12/2018), McFadden ($4/2015); C. West ($11/2015), Spiller ($26/2016), Abdullah ($6/2018), Mason ($6/2016)
WR: Demaryius ($64/2015), Decker ($9/2017), DeSean ($22/2015), DGB ($1/2018), M.Jones ($2/2016); Allen ($1/2016)
TE: Walker ($1/2015), Bennett ($11/2017)
2016: 2 1sts

12 teams, 20 roster spots, Start: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex, DEF, K; PPR, 4 pts/TD pass

Yea, the key part to everything is really knowing your league settings. I'm in the same league as silverviper, and I feel like eventually contracts will favor young guys / rookies you drafted (its a startup league) and that UFA's will eventually be somewhat of an overpayment. Because of this, I think paying for youth makes a little more sense in our league (since I believe UFA will be somewhat of a fill-gaps overpayment (like many professional leagues).

OP: Glad that helped you out and good luck with your draft!

Steel: I'm really interested to see how it goes. Ideally UFA's are over priced like in the NFL. I don't think they will be too far off though because the playing field is limited on who will have room to bid on top F/As from year to year. Also, the way rookie contracts work currently means that they will be really cheap for us for 1 season and then you will either have to match a fair market offer or you will be compensated their draft picks and have to hope to make a good selection again. It's somewhat realistic, but you don't get to ride the rookie wages like you do in some leagues and in the NFL due to the minimum game clause. Although I guess you can counteract through a tag. It just prevents overloading in anyone draft year.
