Hi all,
I'm facing a conundrum. I have to re-sign Todd Gurley in my cap league. Now the price isn't an issue. He only makes about 8-9% of my cap post pay raise. I'm worried if I should go the full 5 years for him, or go lower, like 4, in case he's still performing and I can tag him for that 5th or 6th year. If I go 4 years, I also have Mike Evans and Keenan Allen deals who would expire at the same time. Meaning I could only tag 1 of them. I know it's kind of dumb and it's far away and I'll probably trade them all lol, but this is the first time I've faced this scenario in the short time we've been using contracts. Thoughts?
I know 5 years for a RB is crazy long but Gurley's elite, and looking at historically great RB's they typically fade around year 8 and beyond. I think Gurley is a safe asset to hold through the first 8 years of his career.

Re: Todd Gurley
Do contracts increase in cost each year, or will the salary be the same each year?
Between the 4 year expiring contract issue and Gurley's level as an elite RB, I'd be comfortable giving him a 5-year deal if his salary remains the same. Barring injury (as is the case with everyone), I'd imagine he is still at least a solid producer in 5 years.

Re: Todd Gurley
I'd give him 5 years if for no other reason than because Evans expires in 4. Given how small a percentage of the cap Gurley takes, it's not an inordinate risk.
And, even if Gurley doesn't live up to the hype, he should still be productive.

Re: Todd Gurley
The contract will stay the same for the duration. The penalties aren't terribly strict either. To cut a player, you take a 50% cap hit based on the total amount of the salary, for 1 year. So, 5 x 25 = $125. If for some reason I had to cut him after Y3 for example, he would have 2x25 remaining, which =$50, so the hit would only be $25. So pretty minimal.dlf_jaronf wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 5:34 am Do contracts increase in cost each year, or will the salary be the same each year?

Thanks for the feedback. After writing it out and seeing your responses 5 years seems pretty safe.
