Reality Sports Online - Strategy

Hi everyone,
Just trying to get a sense of strategies people have used in their RSO leagues. In normal dynasty, some like David Johnson or Le'Veon Bell are valued over rookies by a large margin. In RSO, how to you handle weighing the cost of one of the stud RBs ($24-$28 million per year) vs. an unproven rookie such as Leonard Fournette (last year) or Darius Guice ($6 - $7 million per year for 3 - 4 years depending on league)? Is it wise to have one or two studs and try to hit on rookies, or try to spend your cash on proven vets? Just trying to see what other people are thinking.

Definitely a juggling game by making sure that you have enough money to be a player at auction each year but still have a championship team. A solid strategy is to buy 1-3 players at either the RB or WR position that there is no question that they will perform at a high level consistently. The number of years you offer them should follows however long you think that player will remain at that elite level. For some that could be the full 4 years like a Gurley or David Johnson (depending on when your league started) or it could be just a 1-year rental like a Shady McCoy or other similar veteran. Then you supplement losing those players in a couple of years by drafting players behind them in the rookie draft.

If you can hit on 1 or 2 by the time these guys start getting into the final year of their deals that's when you can move them to replenish your draft stock, have your new young studs step in (hopefully your league implemented the new resign feature to retain them), and then start the process over again. Doing this will allow you to have great players this year while still being able to build for the future with young, cheaper talent on rookie deals. Whatever you do, don't get sucked into paying franchise tag money for a huge ADP riser or sleeper player. You'll be burned more often than it usually pans out.

This will depend a lot on league settings such as number of starters/teams and scoring rules. Bell and DJ at 24M-28M would usually be expected to easily outperform their cost. The high draft picks such as Guice also would be expected to outproduce the draft cost. In general, I invest more money in high-dollar players for shallower leagues.

Gents, I write for the site and have done a few startup auctions. Big spending initially tends to be important to secure key players. Locking up rookie RBs on below market contracts have proven invaluable these last two seasons, and as the general dynasty trends towards locking up productive backs early in drafts, that is amplified in auction/salary cap leagues where you can keep or flip their production at a premium.

For example Fournette, Cook, McCaffrey, Kamara are all much more valuable at cost than Corey Davis or even JuJu!
