Are 10 franchises too few for a contract/salary cap league?

Postby AtlasShrugged » Tue Jan 31, 2017 6:19 am

We started up a very basic contract/salary cap league last year with ten guys. This is a solid group that I do not anticipate changing. Having one year under our belt, we want to get into some of the more exotic concepts such as franchise tags, additional IDPs etc (the whole gambit). My question for the board is: are 10 teams too few for this type of league? What are some ways to create scarcity and continue to generate interest? Thanks in advance.

As a person who is in year 3 of a 16 team WR, I can say that scarcity does come from more owners. It doesn't mean that 10 teamers aren't viable.it just means one has to be careful that everyone can compete. The easiest way to ensure owner movement is to have a limit on contract years per player and a contract year cap. This will ensure owner turnover and ensure some level of parity.

10 teamer contract dynasty can still be fun long term if there is a free agent pool.

Of course not. It's all about league setup. Deeper rosters and deeper starting requirements are a start. I'd make it 2QB (or superflex, at least) and 2TE to start with 2RBs, 3WRs, and 2 non-QB flex. I don't do IDP, so I'll leave that to others.

That way, on offense, you have deep starting line-ups and rosters. You'll have some available players on the wire, but not too much to shift the balance dramatically.
