New to Cap - Cap Flexibility vs. Established Talent

Postby SmiceHiggins » Wed Oct 26, 2016 4:00 am

This is my first year doing Dynasty and I am also doing a salary cap league.

League Settings: 10 Team, $250 hard cap, 2QB/RB/WR/Flex 1 TE, 24 man roster

My Team:

I currently have $9 in free cap space. Cap penalties are 25% of the total value in the offseason (50% in season).

I also own 2 2017 1sts, 2 2017 2nds and 2 2018 1sts.

I'm 2-5 and am in 2nd to last place. While I'm only 2 games back from a playoff spot (5 teams make it) I don't think my team can compete. I've already sold off Greg Olsen ($11)who was on an expiring deal for 2 first round picks. Doing that trade I had to take on some extra contracts that were not expiring (Duke Johnson $8, Paul Perkins $5, Ertz $2 and Higbee $1)

Basically, I only have Brees and Hyde as expiring deals that take off a large amount of cap space. They both will be highly coveted free agents next year because most of the 1 year deal players were older players or unproven expensive players.

TEAMS CAN MATCH ANY OFFSEASON FREE AGENT AUCTION BID IF THEY HAVE THE CAP SPACE so I can still retain them if they go for less than my cap total.

My gut is telling me that I have no chance to retain either of them (especially if I plan on adding a couple rookies who will have contract values of $2-$5) and I should try to flip these guys to contenders for other pieces.

By doing this I am also locking in my team with minimal salary cap space next year outside of cuts.

My thinking is to try and get established talent that can help next year and worry about making cuts to free up space sometime in the offseason before rookie drafts. There's an owner who may give up Kelvin Benjamin ($23 @ 3 years) for Hyde and Beasley which seems worth sacrificing cap space flexibility to me. Brees will be the only marquee QB on the market so if/when I lose him I am pretty screwed at QB, so I'd prefer to trade him and get a QB that is locked up (and cheaper).

Since my league is mostly new to Dynasty and Contracts I think I can get better long term value from win now teams and sacrifice this offseason's cap flexibility.

TL;DR: Based on my team should I sacrifice open cap space next year to grab established talent that can help me in the next year or 2 or is it more valuable to just hold onto Brees and Hyde because they have a big chunk of expiring cap
Salary Cap: $250
Current Cap: $231

Typo/Calrification - The Team that owned a free agent at the end of the previous season can match any free agent offseason bid (Restricted Free Agents basically) if they have the cap space at that point in time.
Salary Cap: $250
Current Cap: $231

10 Team Standard, 24 Man Rosters, 2 QB/2 RB/2 WR/ 2 Flex/1 TE

Cap Penalties: 25%, Auction is RFA so I can match any contract

Name (Salary @ Years )
QBs: Dak Prescott ($12 @ 1), Phil Rivers ($19 @ 3), Matthew Stafford ($13 @ 1), Christian Hackenberg ($2 @ 1)
RBs: Todd Gurley ($46 @ 1), Tevin Coleman ($3 @ 1), Gio Bernard ($8 @ 1), Paul Perkins ($5 @ 2),CJ Prosise ($4 @ 3), Dion Lewis ($4 @ 2)
WRs: Allen Robinson ($35 @ 3), Alshon Jeffery ($25 @ 3), Keenan Allen ($23 @ 2), Jordan Matthews ($8 @ 1), Tyler Lockett ($7 @ 3), Corey Coleman ($6 @ 3), Laquon Treadwell ($6 @ 3),Leonte Carroo ($1 @ 2) Tyreek Hill (RFA)
TEs: Zach Ertz ($2 @ 2), Dwayne Allen ($1 @ 1), Tyler Higbee ($1 @ 3)

Draft Picks:
2017: 2.02, 2.03, 3.04, 4.03
2018: 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
2019: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

If you don't think you can WIN the league, I would def be a seller... Just from my own personal experience, I find it better to be all-in or all-out. I would also try and move Hill in addition to Hyde and Brees. Load up on 2017 1sts if you can
10 team standard, keeper with 5-year option contracts (remaining years in parentheses, $5 per additional year when extended), $200 salary cap. Start: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE
2015, 2017 Champs

QB: Jackson ($8 3yr+extension)
RB: Mixon ($5 1yr+extension), Chubb ($5 2yr+extension), Sanders ($5 3yr+ extension), Michel ($5 1yr+extension), Guice ($5 2yr+extension)
WR: Godwin ($1 2yr+extension), AJ Brown ($3 3yr+extension), Chark ($8 3yr+extension), M. Brown ($3 3y +extension), Isabella ($3 3yr+ extension)
TE: Kittle ($3, 2yr+extension), Henry ($1 2yr+extension), Goedert ($1 3yr+extension)

2020: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 2.01, 2.04, 2.10
2021: 1 1st
2022: 2 1st
2023: 1 1st

I just finished my 1st year of Dynasty. One of the leagues I'm in is salary cap. My strategy was/is all about the flexibility. I signed most of my guys to 1yr contracts. I will have 3 times the cap space as anyone else in the league. Now I can go for the established talent, that I want, if I want. Plus I can control the price of them to a certain degree. Check out this podcast, it's great! http://dynastyleaguefootball.com/2016/0 ... ap-crunch/
