It all depends on what the player's salaries look like. Some leagues start each auction at $1 and allow bid increments of $1. Others pre-set salaries and start the bidding there. Either way, it won't take long to get a feel for how much people are willing to pay for the studs.

Set a budget for each position and try to stay with around those amounts. Can then decide if want to spread that amongst multiple players at the position or if want spend it on 1 or 2 guys and look for bargains/$1 guys for the other roster spots at the position. There are lots of sites that provide guidelines on what they consider players should go, however you will likely need to do some customization and for those you will likely have to pay for the site, or you can ballpark/adjust the guideline numbers to your scoring and lineup requirements.

Personally I never get locked into a player but I will tier them at a position with the intent of getting one or two within the tier. I am okay with paying full or close to full price for those players as long as they were the best bargains within the tier.

If you are down on a guy but know he is generally hyped, nominate those players early to eat up cash and ensure don't go for less than what they should. Same for when you have reached your budget at a position, nominate the higher price guys at that position when know you are not going to bid on them. If you have some sleeper/undervalued players you are targeting, wait on them as more likely to get at better prices late in the auction. Spend all your money but don't spend all too early.

Mr Webb, check your email. I've linked you to a spreadsheet so you can go dominate. Thanks for the beer money. Cheers!
