New to auctions, new to contracts, new to salary caps.. HELP

Postby lukkynumber13 » Sat Jul 23, 2016 2:50 pm

Hey all! I'm about to take part in my very first auction/salary cap league tomorrow. It's IDP Dynasty, which in familiar with, but I'm new to contracts & I'm new to auctions for a start up.

Any pointers, even just very general advice, pitfalls to avoid while bidding, etc? Thank you so much!

This is a really cool setup. I ran the numbers on the start requirements and scoring and came up with very balanced value across all positions (special teams being the weakest value).

Top player in the league is.....................drum roll............................. JJ Watt. (ugh and he's hurt!)
Antonio Brown is in like tier 2 as the next MVP.

I wouldn't pay any more than $25 for any player in this format. There is such good balance here. 44 roster spots is a lot, and you don't want to be lacking in any area when the dust settles.

This is by far the best 12-team league setup I've ever seen. It's perhaps the only 12-team league I would enjoy.

Furthermore: Running a budget here, I started with funds for each position group as follows:

QB: $10
RB: $35
WR: $40
TE: $18
DL: $40
LB: $40
DB: $39
OL: $23
ST: $5
TOTAL: $250

This would be my initial takeaway based purely off the number-crunching. I would not stick to this hard and fast because I like to pull money from the budget here to add there... but this is where the math tells me to start.

First, I would pull all of the allotment away from special teams (leaving just $1 and rostering only 1). This group offers the least amount of positional scarcity and has the most turnover year-to-year. None of the top units in 2015 were anywhere near the top 10 in 2014. Punt............

Next, I'd buy two $5 QBs and hope they combine for you to have a top 5 unit... it can be done. This is your 2nd lowest rated unit. Don't roster a 3rd QB.... waste of a roster spot.

Let's talk about the most valuable units
WR and DL you are going to start 3 each week. I'd roster 7 of each (3 of each being $1 stashes). These are also the players you can consistently project to give you positional advantages. I'd over-fund this group with money saved elsewhere.

LB you are starting 3 each week. I'd roster 8 because of high risk of missed games. I tend to invest in this group as a whole. Stay under $15 for your top guys. Do your research and stash three from the bargain bin.

DB is a real sneaky group. They offer the scoring to support starting 4 (your FLEX), but they are pretty tough to predict. I suggest a volume approach here, much like a zero-RB strategy. You're starting 4, so I'd roster 9.

RB has a nice bump from the .25pt/carry. If you're not starting 2 every week, you're compromising their value to your lineup. I'd roster 6 and play some matchups. I sometimes pull money from this group's budget if the rest of the league goes spend-crazy here. I won't pay "the going rate" if the value is not there, and RBs just aren't reliable. Doug Martin and J Stew are, though, and relatively cheap for blue chips. Maybe you can pair them for $30 and get the rest at Walmart.

OL offers good positional advantage. I see TE1 being as valuable as QB1, LB1, and OL1. That's right... there are 9 OLs inside the top 100 MVPs. I'd spend $15 and $5 for my top two and stash one for a buck. I think you could use a strong rotation week-to-week to give yourself the best advantage in the league.

TE offers strong value in this league. TE5=RB5=LB5=$21. After TE5, the drop-off is hard, tho. I'd roster 2 and split their salary much like QB. I'm buying Eric Ebron and Dwayne Allen at their prices and hoping one is a top 5. Hard to imagine that neither pans out.

Avoid taking the fast cars out for test drives. I said earlier that I wouldn't pay more than $25 for any player, but really it's lower than that. Stay in your lane (the right lane). I am willing to let 40 players pass me before I pick up my first player in an auction. This is how I build a team full of team players (like Billy Beane). I've also won the first player in at least three different auctions where everyone was gun-shy. You have to know the speed limit. If you get caught price-enforcing, you'll pay a premium to trade a player to the previous high-bidder. I wouldn't suggest price-enforcing in this format. You need a deep 44-man roster and you don't need a whale in the lineup. You need five or more sharks.

Btw Bruiser, do you have any advice on how many years I should focus on, for which positions? Max 5 years. I would think WR & QB should get 5 years if possible, shorter contracts for RB?

I have to be careful when I assign contracts in my leagues. The dead cap penalties accrue at different rates in each of them. If I get a player at minimum wage, I consider their dead cap to be negligible and will gamble on them with a max term. The more expensive a contract is, I tend to guard against that bad injury or regression by not giving a max contract. The max contract can be a deterrent when trying to sell a player. Same can also be said for a 1yr contract. It may not be as appealing to a potential trade partner for a player to be a 1yr rental.

Three year deals are a great balance to all of the above. Now, if you land Kawan Short for $15, then by all means lock him up for as long as possible. DLs are like the finest wines in fantasy football... ok QBs are the finest, but you get what I mean. They play at a high level well into their 30's.

Generally, I look at every player's real-life contract at sportrac.com and judge how long I can realistically expect them to stay in their current situation. Just because a player (Olivier Vernon) signs a monster contract in the offseason doesn't necessarily mean he will produce at his previous level with his previous team. I let my leaguemates take those risks by letting some players walk.

I will say that I don't have it down to a science. I've made some bad calls and didn't account for inflation in one particular league. I landed an under-priced Watt and Gronk, but was uneasy about giving them more than 2yr contracts (still had sizeable salaries). After year 1, it was apparent that I had awesome value in their salary, but I'm now paying for contract extensions and will pay a Franchise TAG next season to keep Watt (if not traded). Some things you just can't predict.

pm me your email address and I will share the link to your league's price sheet that I created to give the analysis.

Lost in the 1st round! Came in 5th. But very interesting, and a great group of guys in the league. I'm thankful for that.

I ended up making a ton of moves (I don't know any other way!), and I'm going into this next season with DJ as my center piece, so I can't complain about that!
