Is DaeSean Hamilton Going to be a Thing?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Is DaeSean Hamilton Going to be a Thing?

Postby chalorpas » Thu Jan 17, 2019 7:22 am

This question is for a 0.5 PPR, 16-team league, where my team is in a rebuild. I am considering offering something like DaeSean Hamilton and Chris Herndon for what should be a late 2020 1st. I like both assets and what is holding me back is this equation: Case Keenum + Slot Receiver = Fantasy Points. With Sanders out, will DaeSean Hamilton shine? I own lots of 2020 1sts and would love to own more, but I am wondering whether to hold in the hope that his value will be rise a lot during next season. Thoughts?

I would be SHOCKED if someone gave you a 2020 first for those 2 and if they did i bet it would be a team desperate for a tight end. With Hamilton theres probably nothing there just playing the odds game he's got a shot just like the 10 other unproven rookie wide receivers although I would put him, well behind Gallup, callaway, or Washington.

I've heard that the Broncos will bring back Emmanuel Sanders next season. I think Hamilton has decent upside but will probably split time at slot with Sanders next season. He could be in line for the 3rd year breakout though once Sanders and Keenum leave.

Really, the 2020 late 1st will basically be the same thing you have right now in Hamilton, it's just restarting the clock with another rookie to see if he pans out. Would extend your rebuild.

I don't like that deal at all. Hamilton came on strong after Sanders went down. I'm hoping to buy but the discount window has likely closed. I'm also quite high on Herndon.

Just keep the 2 young rookies that have potential. You're in a rebuild. You have what you are looking for but you don't have to wait a year and a half for that pick to turn into a player. Not to mention that player will still be an unknown...

I think Hamilton has the PPR talent to be a solid wr2/3 for awhile. Sanders just needs to retire. And if I were a Denver fan, I like the prospects of having Sutton on the outside with Hamilton in the slot. Just need a QB that can throw a better ball than Keenum(who should be a premier backup)

I like and own Hamilton. Good route runner and Sanders' injury will open up a lot of looks next season. However, I would not be expecting a 1st back for him.

Personally, I don't believe Sanders will play a single snap until the second half of the 2019 season, at the earliest. Achilles injuries are extremely difficult for WRs to recover from (see Crabtree, Michael). I also like Herndon quite a bit as well given his chemistry with Darnold.

This is complicated, because in a 16-team league, a late 2020 1st would be around pick 12-16, which in normal leagues would be an early/mid 2nd. Do you think there's a chance that this 2020 1st could end up being earlier than currently projected? If so, I'd take the 1st. However, if the pick is nearly guaranteed to be that late, I think I'd rather hold onto Hamilton + Herndon.

In a 16 team league, a late 1st is probably around where I'd value both players right now. I do think both of them combined next year will get you more though.

I'd much rather have the two players. They're both young, and have already produced decently in their rookie campaigns.

Like others have said:
- That pick in 2020 is more like a early second
- While the class is supposedly great, the player you pick is an unknown and may not be
- You'd be restarting the clock on your rebuild
- You'd also be giving up depth and in a 16 teamer depth is huge

From weeks 14-17, games that Hamilton played as the slot starter (once Sanders was out), he was the WR25 in half point. That's pretty good considering he was a rookie and coming off an injury that sidelined him most of the season.

Herndon was only TE14 after everything was said and done, but that's pretty solid for a rookie TE. In fact, he was the number 1 rookie TE this yr.

It's a lot to give up for a shot in the dark draft pick, if anything, hold these players then sell them in-season next yr, when they're actually producing. You'd likely get more for them then.

We would need to know where the picks is. It could be anywhere from 1 to 16..... that's a pretty big range. There's no way you are getting a 2020 1st for those two guys unless it is late, which would be an early to mid second in most leagues.

I like what I saw of Hamilton late. I'm holding him as I've learned that patience is a virtue when it comes to young receivers, especially in a rebuild situation.

Thanks for the thoughtful advice, everyone. I appreciate it. The pick in question I am pretty confident would be in the 11-16 range, so yes, it could end up being equivalent to an early 2nd in a 12 team league. The other fact about the league that I failed to mention is that we can keep 8 vets and 4 rookies each year (yes, I know this changes things). So there is a bit of a rookie premium / vet devaluation in this league. That's the main reason I am trying to capitalize on selling the rookies now, before the keeper deadline. Once Herndon and Hamilton become vets, basically they need to be in the top 128 of ADP to be worth considering as a keeper the following year. I may try throwing them out there to teams that don't have as many rookie keepers and who don't have as high of a 1st round pick, and see what happens.
