How should I prioritize players (age, skill)

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

How should I prioritize players (age, skill)

Postby Alextzak77 » Wed Jan 16, 2019 7:10 pm

So Im new to the dynasty scene and how should I rank players, what would be the difference between a old player like edelman who still could have a season or two left or someone like Christian kirk or A miller who are young and have a good potential to become solid players in a few years. What is your perfect balance between a high level player or a young player who could become a stud?

So in reference to the guys listed, If i was in a dynasty league and had to rank them it would go:
Kirk
Miller
Edelmen

Both age and talent are certainly factors. But you can't overlook the talent. For instance, going purely by talent AP would be ranked over Guice and in a redraft I would agree, dynasty league it would take AP + alot for me to trade Guice and I'd still consider declining.

One thing to consider - dynasty leagues are not 1 year sprints. They are multiple year marathons.

With those 3 guys you mentioned, say I wanted Kirk but had Edelman. A starting offer would be Edelman + 2nd or ( some may say 1st ) to move Kirk.

Kirk and Miller hold far more value in dynasty. Dynasty takes a while to get used to but age with upside type players are gold. Some of this depends on the league and other owners philosophy as well. As mentioned above, Edleman and a 2nd would be a good opening offer for Kirk. Also, if you like a young player, grab them before a breakout or it can get very pricey.

Id suggest deciding if you want to try to compete for a title or spend a few years building your team. The difference in these scenarios can play a big part in how you value proven production vs young prospects. Edelman contributes on contending teams, kirk not so much. If you arent contending.... Dont go after guys that wont be around when you are. Likewise, sell guys that have value to contenders if your still building. These guys suggesting kirk is worth edelman +.... clearly dont care about winning right now.... Kirk gave them little to nothing while edelman was busy putting up 15-18 a game.

Age and talent is definitely prioritized but every case is different. AB and Julio Jones could be down to there last couple as well and are still top 20 assets, obviously going a few spots later than redraft leagues though. I draft young though in my leagues especially at RB where 25 is the new 30. All about assembling the most capital in dynasty though, assemble your rankings and draft the most value based on those rankings. Make trades to fill out what you don't have. Hit the wide receivers hard after round 1 because people will overdraft rbs with a short shelf life as well.

there is no right answer its learning as you go and adjusting your own values on the fly.

of the 3 players you listed to me Edleman has the most value, but i wanna win next year and/or the year after. if im not in a position to do so then i have almost no value on edleman and highly value kirk and miller. but if i own edleman and a top team owns kirk i would not be expecting to add a 2nd to edleman to obtain kirk. But that doesnt mean the valuation given earlier of edleman+2nd for kirk was wrong, it just means the teams are in different places (edleman +2 for kirk would work in a situation where a team thinks they have a shot but not the best shot to win in the league but are willing to go for it if they were getting a pick back as well)

hope that helps

one sentence of advice to keep with you that i think more people need to hear and understand is this- "You play to win the game. you dont play it just to play it!" - Herm Edwards

so many people get youth horny to stay "in the running" year after year. dont be that guy. finishing 6th -3rd each year wont do you any good, you gotta see when your window is there and attack. make trades for older high end guys if win now, and trade for youth if rebuilding. but dont always be in a mini rebuild like i see very often.

A lot of it would depend on your roster. If you're competing and have to choose between Edelman and a rookie WR who hasn't really produced, you go with the proven guy. If you're rebuilding, the rookie probably has more value. I'm not the biggest fan of ADPs, but that will probably give you a good idea of how the community ranks/rates players and it can be a good tool to use when it comes to making your own rankings.
