Three "throwing in the towel" trades

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Three "throwing in the towel" trades

Postby jeffster » Fri Oct 19, 2018 5:14 am

In a 12 team PPR superflex, a team I thought would be competitive is instead mired firmly at the lower-middle of the pack. It was possible I could make some competitive moves and squeak into the playoffs, but I didn't think I had a realistic chance to beat the top teams, so I went the other way and quit on this season. Made a few trades, all with the top teams pushing to win, yesterday:

Gave: Adam Thielen
Received: Devonta Freeman, mid-2019 1st

Gave: Demariyus Thomas, late-2019 2nd (probably the favorite to be 2.12)
Received: DJ Moore

Gave: DJax
Received: late-2019 2nd

Basically I unloaded three older, relatively productive WRs to land a lot of future value. I'm pretty happy with it, but there's always second-guessing, so wanted some opinions. It leaves me a lot younger with talent everywhere still, thin at WR but with three 1sts and two 2nds to spend on the position later.

Yeah, not a fan of trade one. I think Thielen is worth more than that. He's right up there with Hill as the #1 fantasy WR.

I like trade 2. Trade 3 is fine as well.

You could have gotten much more with trade 1. Trades 2 and 3 are fine. Sometimes though, when rebuilding, it’s ok to lose a little in trades since you get the added benefit of ensuring you lose and get higher rookie picks of your own the following year.

I agree that Thielen should be worth more, but have you actually seen him moved for a whole lot more? He's on the Baldwin track of never being valued what he's actually worth. The other offers I got for him were way worse than this.

I considered just holding him, but he'll be 29 before he's useful to me again, and his presence in my starting lineup was solely responsible for me being stuck in the middle of the pack, rather than the bottom. This trade alone probably moved my first earlier by three or four spots.

As said above, not loving the Thielen trade. Freeman isn't really that young and seems like he's on the declining side of his career, the first is nice but I'd have liked to get a younger player than freeman.
QB- Andrew Luck, Kirk Cousins, Teddy Bridgewater
WR- Odell Beckham, Mike Evans, Demaryius Thomas, Randall Cobb, Courtland Sutton, Tyler Lockett, Tre'quan Smith, Laquon Treadwell, Rashard Higgins
RB- Todd Gurley, Dalvin Cook, Saquon Barkley, Mark Ingram, Tevin Coleman, Mike Davis, Corey Grant, Jeremy Hill (IR)
TE- George Kittle, Hunter Henry (IR), Trey Burton
Def- CHI, CLE
K- Justin Tucker

In a SF I have no problem with any of the trades - it will definitely be interesting to see how long Thielen can keep this up - but I do not think Freeman is done and a mid 2019 1st would have netted you likely one of your choice at RB/QB/WR after Barkley if it had been this year. This is one of those trades where you're going to have to keep working to 'milk the value' out of the deals.

That alone can be very worthwhile so long as an owner is strong on the draft component of dynasty. By strong I do not mean just good at drafting rookies - since rookies are obviously at times very hard to predict - but all the intangibles that go with having a higher draft spot - like using the pick to get you someone you like better - or even just moving back and picking up a little extra.

Theoretical value can differ greatly from actual value. While this seems light for Theilen, I just don't see anyone paying 3-4 1sts for him. That said, I don't want Freeman at this point. Seems he is starting to break down and at his age and size, that's a major concern. I'd hold for a player with a more positive trajectory.

If you can eventually flip Freeman for a 1st or something younger (since your goal is to rebuild), trade 1 might not look as bad as it does now. Trade 2 is ok, but you probably didn't need to include the 2nd. I like trade 3.
