Give Lindsay, get Kerryon - why isn't this an easy accept?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Give Lindsay, get Kerryon - why isn't this an easy accept?

Postby JJRules » Fri Sep 21, 2018 8:17 am

BLUF: I know the value is there and I should accept, but I don't want to. Talk some sense into me.

I was offered Kerryon Johnson for my Phillip Lindsay in my 10-team non-PPR league. I've been a huge Kerryon fan since he was in college and am still incredibly bullish on his NFL prospects, but I just don't want to accept this trade. Lindsay has looked almost otherworldly on the field and I can't make myself hit the accept button.

Is Lindsay as silly good as he's looked?
Will DET figure out what they've got in Kerryon and give him the reins?

I sometimes feel like Lindsay is like Cohen was last year. I would expect things to settle down some and that Royce will start to see more of the backfield split. I think Kerryon has a better chance to own the job in 2019 and beyond that Lindsay does.

Lindsay just doesn't have the size at 5'8" 165 to be the main guy. I'm not all that high on Kerryon, but there is lead back potential there.

I'd probably take Johnson, especially in non-PPR, but it's pretty close. In such a shallow 16-roster league, I see no issue holding onto Lindsay, as he's producing now. I'd imagine a lot of high-upside rookies get dropped mid-season in that kind of format.

That's a great point. I remember a league that size and it was almost like redraft in the sense that FA potential was out there

Did Lindsay shrink? Could have sworn he was 190  but you’re right, he won’t be a lead back. I’d take my chances on Kerryon

In a 10 teamer there is little point owning a player like Lindsay that will never own all the touches. Give me Johnson's workload potential

Even with my immense Kerryon love - I've long thought he was the best non-Barkley RB in the class - this trade was still really hard to accept.

Just accepted this, about an hour before it expired. Thanks for the help folks.

I still think Lindsay is going to be special.

I give you props for accepting the trade. Going on pedigree, we side with kerryon naturally. Going with college production it's really close. Kerryon is more of a touchdown producer but both had great 2017 seasons, with PLin doing it in '16 too. Looking at nfl production is where things start to balance out a bit. Kerryon doesn't have a great situation to be a bellcow but things will clean up by next season. Lindsay started in a committee too, but with shear heart and ferocity he earned every touch the hard way. They drafted royce to be their guy but obviously were still high on lindsay to give him such a big guaranteed contract as an undrafted player. Lindsay looks like he sees things at a different speed than most guys when he goes the hole. Watch the week 2 highlights and you see he has it in him to smash it up the middle when need be, and his pass catching skills are on point with kerryon's. Such a tough accept with the way phil is tearing it up so far (13rb in my .5 ppr league). This season will probably be a win for lindsay but I think it's close for career production. I can see kerryon as a 800rush yards/400 receiving yards/6-8vTD next year if they narrow down the backfield. I could see lindsay putting up about 700rush/550 receiving/6-9 TD next season. It's a good spot to be having one of these guys 😎

I’d rather have Lindsay myself. He’s only 190lbs but he is explosive & tough. He carried the ball 675 times in college. Reminds me of Eric metcalf.

I still can’t get over Kerryon hurting his knee vs Alabama & just dropping the ball during the play. He doesn’t seem like a Bell-cow either.

I think you made the right decision. I like Lindsay, but like others are saying, he's got another rookie in the same backfield battling him for the starting job. It's pretty safe to say that Johnson will have the job in Detroit next year or this year, if Blount gets hurt.

Been there done that - you did the right thing - solicited outside advice, mulled it over and made the decision you felt was best. In the end I think you made the right call.

Rookie RB #1

- undrafted
- satellite-back profile at sub-200lbs
- has been very good to start his rookie year
- 24 y/o rookie
- competing for snaps with a 22 y/o rookie RB with a bellcow profile that was selected in the 3rd round and has been pretty good, too

Rookie RB #2

- traded up for 2nd round pick
- every-down, feature-back profile
- has been quite good to start his rookie year
- 21 y/o rookie
- his competition for snaps is a 31 y/o RB on a one-year deal he's already completely outplaying and a strictly passing-down specialist

Rookie RB #2 is the easy choice.

I like Lindsay plenty. But he still profiles as a (potentially very good) satellite-back. KJ can be more than that. He's also fully three years younger than Lindsay (21.2 vs 24.2), which I think is huge -- it suggests KJ isn't even finished physically developing yet.
