Meh I was in a league where Darnold went 6th (and yes it was 1 QB). If an owner believes that a QB is going to succeed long term I see no problems taking the QB early - long term QB production is (imo) key to a successful dynasty team and QBs with high draft pedigree do have for the most part a safe bet on return for production - also as it is I saw Watson go in the late 1st in 1 QB leagues last year - and surprisingly enough his production more than warranted such a selection.
It also seems like this owner could be a Jets fan based off of their roster (plenty of Jets), so that definitely would mean they'd not want to risk missing out on their QB of the future.
So yeah while the smart play would have been to wait to draft him and/or move back to do so - it looks like they only had the 1 pick and if no one wanted to move up then you draft your guy even if it is early - a much worse selection at 1.05 would have been someone like ESB or Auden Tate (and they had projected 1st round values at some point).
