What’s the better move for my team?

Postby Jcedwards » Thu Jul 19, 2018 11:51 am

Update: I redid the poll by adding another option.

I just made a trade and I am left with an open roster spot. Should I pickup one of these players or activate Njoku from the taxi squad (have a max of 3 TEs on the active roster and I just traded one away, so I have a spot at TE)?

Austin Hooper (was just dropped for a trade)
Nick Vannett
Ryan Grant

I like Hooper. He is an athletic move Te and worked with Ryan all summer in anticipation of a breakout year. Vannett I would not even consider. Grant is just too buried on the depth chart for me.

Those are the best 3 right now, unless you have some really deep sleepers/ rookies. With us having a 6 player taxi squad, a lot of the rookies are already gone.

Now there is no guarantee that I will even get Hooper. Since he was just dropped in a trade, he goes to waivers, and I am 8th on the waiver priority.

Hooper SHOULD be the pick. He is by far the most valuable with the clearest path to play time. That being said, I don't think that he ever amounts to anything higher than a TE2 -- at best.

But, for end-of-the-bench stuff, I'm a gambler. I don't care about trying to get middle-of-the-road upside players (such as Hooper); I'm looking for someone who could bust out. With that in mind, Grant will be the popular choice. I do see some value there, too, but I also don't see any way that he ever becomes a top-15 or even top-20 WR.

So, I'll gamble on Vannett. Draft pedigree, elite QB, and massssive opportunity. IMO, he has the highest likelihood of being a roster-clogger. But, the only one who has top-end upside, unlikely as it might be. (As of my post, there are six votes for Hooper, none for Grant, and my lone vote for Vannett.)

If you're less interested in the gamble, then I'd take Grant. I just don't see Hooper as ever amounting to anything.

I’m kind of along the same thinking as you. Hooper may not even be there for me as he may get grabbed on the waivers before mine. I’m debating whether to even use my waiver pick on him. I think I may just keep my pick and see if someone else is dropped before the season starts that is a better use of my waiver.

I don’t really need Hooper honestly, but I do have an open spot. He seems like the “safer” option between the 3, but doesn’t really offer much upside. It won’t hurt me to take a shot on Vannett. If he turns into something, I have a good TE for the future, but if he doesn’t, he is an easy cut. Only problem is that I would have to keep Njoku on my taxi squad versus activate him to the active squad (can only have 3 active TE’s, but only rookies and 2nd year players can go in the taxi squad, so Vannett doesn’t qualify).

not sure what you mean by, Hooper "doesn't offer much upside"...please explain...to me he is nothing but upside

I guess he does have upside. But he didn’t really show anything the last 2 years, at least to me. But you are right, TEs usually break out in there 3rd year.

That is what I am thinking now. Would almost rather have him on the active roster and another player on the taxi squad, versus keeping him on the practice squad and picking up Hooper/ Vannett/ Grant, who I will never use in my starting lineup probably (unless major injuries).

Njoku is the best option. Having said that I would try to grab Hooper and drop ASJ myself. So I would go for Hooper then if you get him drop ASJ and activate Njoku.
