What is a stud's cost in only futures?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

What is a stud's cost in only futures?

Postby Jaysof » Sat Jun 16, 2018 10:42 am

Pretty self-explanatory. I have the opportunity to acquire a stud like David Johnson for 4 future firsts, which got me thinking: how many future 1sts are needed to acquire a true stud? Is it worth blowing up your future in return for one stud player?

My opinion is no because one player doesn't win u championships..Its by building a team and acquiring studs when u have the capital, not mortgaging ur team for one guy

I was offered DJ for three firsts and I declined. In terms of value it was probably a good deal for me but I like the idea of building my team via draft and filling the holes via WW/Trade.

I would never make a trade like this at least not for a RB. I’d give 3 and possibly 4 depending on where they should land for Nuk/Odell

If the firsts are projected late and you have a fairly deep team, I personally like getting a surefire stud. I think all boils down to personal preference, though. If you're one piece away from being a serious championship contender, I personally do it 100% of the time with late projected 1sts.

If you have a future pick projected 1.1-1.4, it would obviously be more difficult to part with the 1st.

Yes and no. I once turned down giving like 3 or 4 firsts for Elliott and when I look back at who those picks ended up being, I cringe at how big of a steal he would have been. Hindsight of course, and I get why it's hard to give up all those picks for one asset. Years like 2014 and last year could really have you kicking yourself.

I will almost always give up picks for proven players. I miss more than I hit in drafts. Typically I tend to fair better with 2nd rounders.

Pretty much impossible to answer this. It depends on the stud and the picks.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

🦬PRIME🦬
QB: Hurts, Howell
RB: Mixon, Jones, Sanders, Dobbins, Akers, Roschon, Dowdle, Kelley
WR: Nuk, Godwin, Cooper, Lockett, Flowers, Chark, Collins, Hollins, Tillman, Tolbert
TE: Hockenson, Chig, Trautman
Taxi: Willis, Z. White, M. Mims, T. Palmer

Hull Awaits
$450 cap, 60 contract years

QB: Lawrence $5/3, Richardson $5/5, Minshew $1/0, Jones $1/0, Heinicke $1/0, Tyrod $1/0
RB: Achane $4/4, Warren $2/4, Roschon $7/5, Dillon $4/1, Hubbard $2/1, Kelley $1/0
WR: Nuk $78/1, MT $25/1, M. Williams $1/0, JSN $21/5, Reed $4/5, Rice $4/5, M. Wilson $2/5
TE: Thomas $1/0, Hill $1/0, Parham $1/0

I would not do it using future picks, not knowing where they will land...sure, sure, we all say things like “projected late, mid” etc etc, but too much can happen.

If I know where the picks are such as this years picks, then it all depends on my depth. If I’m contending and the picks are late, then I’d consider it. Tougher in this years draft though as it is really good.

I gave up 3-1st, 2-2nds, & 2-3rds for Levon Bell last year. It helped me win the league for the 3rd time in 4 years. I had no issue giving up those potential late first rounders. Picking 12-14th over the next few years, the likelyhood of finding a stud are very low.

I’d make the deal. Might seem like a lot, but you can turn around and trade DJ for 2-3 players that can help you for the next 4 years as opposed to waiting

That seems like a lot for a stud RB, I probably wouldn't touch it for more than three, and not if more than one had a good chance to be early.

But like others have been saying, this just comes down to luck and talent evaluation. If you did this for DJ or OBJ last year, or Megatron before he retired unexpectedly, then you got screwed. If a piece you gave up became Hunt or Kamara, you got screwed. But if the pieces you gave up became, say, Abdullah and Perriman, you're happy as hell.

Can only answer this confidently with more context I think. So I’ll use my own team as context.

Would I give 4 future 1sts for DJ? I dunno, maybe. That’d make my lineup pretty saucy. Lot of capital though, it’s close.

Would I sell OBJ or Zeke for 4 1sts? Very unlikely, but maybe if I could confidently project some early ones
