DJ Trade

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

DJ Trade

Postby ThatGuyBrian » Tue May 08, 2018 11:53 am

So I took part in a dispersal draft and was left with some really bad receivers but on the plus side my running backs were pretty good (Elliot, Ajayi, Hyde and Booker). I recently made a trade to add David Johnson to my running backs and I wanted to get a feel for if I paid too much or not.

Trade
I received: David Johnson
I gave up: 2018 3rd overall pick, Corey Davis and David Njoku

I kinda of viewed it as two firsts and Njoku for Johnson. The team is in the sig and yes I know my receivers are horrible.

Honestly no I don't think you did overpay. I like Davis a lot and 1.03 is definitely value. Njoku has value and upside not yet realized. But DJ is a super stud. You did well

That's pretty much my thoughts. Plus at 1.03 it would be too high to select a receiver and I would probably draft another running back. At that point why not just trade for the proven commodity?

I think you'll need to start looking for some WR's.

If you don't trade and try to build through the draft then DJ will do you no good because he might be on his decline at that point. So at some point during the season you'll have to trade either DJ or Zeke for a stud WR.
16 team - 42rosters - 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 2FLEX, 1PK, 3DE/DL, 2DB, 2LB, 1DFLEX

RB: L. Bell, D. Cook, J. Conner, M. Sanders, A. Blue, J. Ajayi, A. Barnes.
WR: M. Thomas, A.J. Green, J. Jones, C. Godwin, Z. Jones, J. Reynolds, K. Kirkwood, J. Moore, J. Hurd, T. Benjamin.
TE: Z. Ertz, J. Smith, M. Andrews, D. Waller, J. Sternberger.
K: M. Badgley.
DB: L. Collins, J. Johnson, J. Tart, C. Geathers, M. Blair.

You gave up a lot. Solid move, but don't be surprised if Davis is the most valuable piece in this deal by this time next year.

Contender - DJ

With that said, you probably should've kept what you had. You need WRs badly.

Well I get that but I wasn't going to draft a receiver at 1.03 and Corey Davis alone wasn't going to fix all my WR problems. In my mind I now have a bigger bargaining chip than I did with the other three pieces.

Don't get me wrong, I think you came out on top in terms of value.

I just think from a team-dependancy perspective you would've been better off packaging some combination of 1.03/Njoku/Bryant (or some other WR on your team) for an upgrade at WR to pair with Corey Davis - then you'd have two WR1s and Zeke as a starting core, rather than DJ, Zeke and literally no starting caliber WRs whatsoever.

It's all pedantic at this point of course, but just offering my opinion.

I get what your saying. Perhaps during the year a team making a run will offer me the moon for a running back. I guess that was the hope and I didn't really have aspirations of winning this year. Just figured DJ would give me the best value for my investment. Plus I should be able to snag a couple of decent receivers in the draft and possibly trade Hyde or Ajayi for more picks.

Seems pretty fair to me, but now you have to work on improving that WR group. I'm afraid you might at some point end up having to trade DJ for picks and a WR, so may have been counterintuitive.

I wouldn't say DJ's value is down, but I think people are forgetting just how game changing his point per game are towards wins and losses in fantasy football. I think you got a discount on DJ versus what he would have cost you had he not been injured this past season. For this reason I believe you came out of the trade better and with more value on your side and you will see a return higher than you paid when the season rolls around and a team wants that DJ level stud to take them to a championship. You really shouldn't be worrying about team needs yet, you need to be focusing on getting as many good players on your teams as possible

Love me some DJ, but as others have said, you need WR help in a bad way. I prob would have looked to trade down with the 1.03 to the 1.07-1.09 range plus a 2nd or even another WR? Regardless, if DJ gets hot and you're not on a good run by week 6, i'd be selling in a heartbeat! Prob with selling him to a contender is, you have to find a guy who is willing to move a stud WR and if they're contending, they'd have to be real deep to do so. Best shot may be targeting an guy who gets hurt? Sounds bad, but ARob was moved in many leagues last year after he was hurt where a guy in rebuild could take advantage of sitting on him till next season!
