Am I playoff bound in 2018?

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

Am I playoff bound in 2018?

Postby btv802 » Mon Apr 23, 2018 10:09 am

Saw somebody else do this and thought it'd be fun.

Six teams make the playoffs in our twelve team league. My roster is in sig (notice the 1.02 pick that I will be using shortly). What say you? I'll keep my opinions to myself until I see some responses

I organize my roster sig in a weird way, so here is my projected starting lineup for 2018 if that's helpful.
QB: Mariota
RB: Mixon
RB: 1.02
WR: Robinson
WR: Cooks
WR: Watkins
WR: Davis
WR: Fuller
TE: Ebron

Mix in whoever from my bench has opportunity or breaks out...

You have a lot of upside and could easily make the playoffs but could also very easily get an early pick next year

Too many unknowns. Id say no with some depth issues at RB and lack of top5 QB.

You need far too many things to break your way, imo. I wouldn't want to be going into the season counting on all of Mixon, Davis, the 1.02, Watkins and Ebron to produce well enough to be in a weekly line-up.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Like others have said, that is a varying team. I think this looks like a lineup that should/could/maybe make playoffs. But literally everyone there at every position has a big old question mark hanging above their head. You getting a top 3 pick wouldn't surprise me if they don't pan out, and you winning your league with ease would be equally unsurprising if they all live up to the potential they have
Team 1- 10 team ppr, 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 2Flx, 1D, 1K
2022: 1-8
Finishes: 6th, 6th, 1st, 5th, 6th, 9th
QB: Lamar Jackson, Purdy
RB: Bijan, Dobbins, Achane, Charbonnet, Algier, McBride, waiver trash
WR: JSN, QJ, Addison, Dotson, Skyy Moore, Jameson Williams, Hyatt, T Dell, Boutte, Skowronek, Quez Watkins, Greg Dortch, waiver trash
TE: Hockenson, F Monroe, Juwan, Musgrave
D/K: Patriots, Vikings, Saints, Dicker

picks-
2024- 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,5
2025 1,1,1,2,3,4,5

team 2- 12 team SF, .5PPR, .5TE boost, 1QB, 1SF, 2 RB, 3WR, 1TE, 2Flex
2022: 8-1
Finishes: 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd :wall:
QB: Ljax, GenoD Jones, Minshew, Dobbs
RB: CMC, Stevenson, A Jones, Chubb, A Mattison, D cook, Perine, Mckinnon,
WR:Tyreek, Diggs, C Kupp, D Adams, Keenan Allen, Lockett, Gallup, A Lazard, Hodgins
TE: Kelce, LaPorta, Irv Smith,
No picks until 2026 5th rounder lol

Alright so yeah, I don't really expect to be a playoff team in 2018 either. Feels like I'm relying on too many players with too many question marks. I'm in year two with this team and all along I've been roster building with a focus on a sustainably good playoff team for the long term rather than pushing my chips in to win as soon as possible. I always expected it would take a few years to get to a place where I'm making the playoffs consistently and that's why I've held on to my future 1sts.

Appreciate the opinions though! Just wanted to take the temperature on what I currently have. I've got a guy in my league always telling me that he thinks I'm a contender this year and I should sell my future picks to make a push. Not sure I feel like doing that and these responses certainly strengthening my resolve to be patient.

Nahhh I think his intentions are good as he's usually suggesting trades to me that don't involve him. "Hey you should package your '19 & '20 1st to go buy player X from so and so"...so I don't think that's his intention. He's hopelessly optimistic about young and unproven players and I think he actually believes in my roster. I love the look of my roster long term but in the short term I'm admittedly a little bit terrified of it

I'm a big believer in selling future picks but I think that when we talk about "win now" there can be a lot of variation on what that means. If an RB or WR has at least another 3 years ahead of them those are the pieces I want to be trading for. There are plenty of owners out there who are willing to sell off a player too early just for a future pick. Those are the opportunities to go after and to use the same strategy year over year. So you are getting the best of both worlds...win now, win later, and you always get more of those shiny draft picks to trade even if they are "future".

Yeah your WRs could go either way, definitely boom or bust and I'd probably say the same thing about your RBs. You could definitely use a proven stud at that position. I think in a perfect world the ceiling is reaching the playoffs but I don't see a champion here yet. A couple moves and I think you are close.
Team 1 --- "Zeke & Destroy" ---10 Team --- Standard scoring

RB: Ezekiel Elliot, Alvin Kamara, Doug Martin, Alex Collins, Wayne Gallman
WR: Julio Jones, DeAndre Hopkins, Mike Evans, Demaryius Thomas, Alshon Jeffrey, Laquon Treadwell, Carlos Henderson, Cooper Kupp, Taywan Taylor, Curtis Samuel
TE: Evan Engram, Trey Burton

I do have a fear that in not aggressively selling future picks (which a lot of the guys in my league make a habit of doing as quickly as possible) that I'm going to never be quite good enough. If some things fall the right way I think I'll eventually put together a competitive playoff team but never be a true contender. Still, I'm not sure that with the way I've constructed the roster so far that selling my '19 1st is going to even come close to putting me over the top in a way that would make it worth it. I find it pretty hard to judge in general  but I'm trying to stick to a two year plan of building quality depth of talent in my roster before I start making a push.

I have an owner in one of my leagues that was a bottom feeder for his first 8 or so seasons with the occassional .500 type year mixed in. He pretty much never traded, rarely made pickups and just built thru the drafts each season. He finally got to the champion ship game in back to back seasons and won one title. Not the way I'd do it and I wouldn't want that kind of patience but he got there.

I think you're a bubble team. Biggest concern is lack of depth at key spots. Like most say if things break right for you it could be a good year but if one or 2 things go south I don't think you have the horses in the stable to withstand any type of negativity.
My PPR dynasties (QB/RB/WR/TE/FL):

Under construction...just noticed teams I had shown were very different than where they are now (lots of trading last 12 months). LOL

Too many question marks to really know.. Your RBs lack depth, big time.. After Guice, I don't trust any of your backs. You also better hope Guice lands in a good spot. I like your WR depth, but I don't like Fuller as one of your starters. I think if you package fuller with another good WR you could possibly get another good starter.
