In SF, trade for Alex Smith or invest in a QB with picks

This is the place for team advice - should I make this trade, should I draft that player, etc.

In SF, trade for Alex Smith or invest in a QB with picks

Postby hjernazian » Fri Apr 20, 2018 1:02 pm

I have a standing offer in which I acquire Alex Smith ($3) for my 2018 4th rounder, and we swap picks for 2019 (I get his 4th, he gets my 3rd). Smith would be my QB3 in 2019 assuming Brees hangs them up after this season. See team in my sig.

Now, we have a 4 QB cap in my league, meaning, if I were to acquire Smith, I would not be able to draft a QB at the 1.07 (am assuming Baker will be there, or maybe even L. Jackson) or at the 3.01 (assuming Rudolph will be there, or whatever QB the patriots take really).

I am giving up peanuts for Smith and project him to be a viable QB2/3 (at worst) for the next 3-4 years. He is 34, but showing no signs of slowing down.

What you guys do? acquire Smith and invest the draft capital with my first and third on other skill positions, or use that roster spot for a Baker/Jackson (Darnold and Rosen will be gone) or a Rudolph in round 3?

Without the QB roster restrictions, I would acquire Smith and draft a QB, but I can not do that. TIA.

I'd make that trade and then either flip him for something better or move the pick when you're on the clock if the best player available is a QB.

That's very cheap for Smith given that your league is transitioning to superflex. However, I'd rather take a shot on one of the rookie QBs at 1.07 unless you can trade Newton or Brees. Personally, I'd look to trade Brees if possible. He's a very replaceable low-end QB1 / high-end QB2 in fantasy with NO's new run-heavy approach and his declining arm strength. If someone in your league still values him as an elite QB1, I'd try to sell ASAP.

I've been trying to sell Brees forever now. No one is biting because since 2018 won't be a SF year, people don't see him returning in 2019 is my best guess.

Is your league capping QBs at 4 until it officially turns into a SF league so people don't hoard them, or is it going to remain that way always? If so, you guys might want to discuss changing that. Doesn't make any sense having a SF league and capping the number of QBs you can roster, especially at a ridiculously low amount like 4.

Make the deal and immediately flip smith for the 1.05 or a mid/high end skill position.

yeah that makes a ton of sense. it was capped at 4 prior to decision being made for SF. Now that it is, I don't see how it can stay there.

exactly what i was thinking. only problem is if I do make the trade for Smith, it puts me at cap for the number of QBs rostered, meaning, I wouldn't be able to draft one in the rookie draft.
